I think people assumed I meant he does cruel and violent things this chapter, and that's why I was warning that the worst of his behaviour was looming, but it's more like he bullies a bunch of little girls and whines at their keepers, and it's Rector Adelier's lowest point. Bear with us.

Duane... just spitting the plain truth about the sacrifices to these girls and assuming they don't know, offering to protect them to get them away, cannot reverse the years of their acceptance of it; they could have left, as Missus Crazybirds did, if they felt their lives worth the consequences that would follow. What's heartbreaking is that they have not been taught they ARE worth more than those twinsflesh cutlets and the bribes to their hometowns, and those who walk into the sacrifice throw away futures they don't know how to assert the real value. Even Siya with her craving for the time to develop as an artist doesn't think she OUGHT to have what she longs for, or that her being deprived of the time to grow and learn is an injustice to sear the skies! Yelling at her, though, can't show her how to stake her own claim to a future, and reject claims that pretend she must give up her whole life or be a bad, bad person
