Elka had really liked him. She thought he was different from your usual Ald. But turns out she'd liked the character in the play, not the actual man. Unspeakably disappointing.

Quigley Hates himself so much he wants everyone else to hate him. The picture he's painting may be nearly as far removed from reality as the play. He's drawing himself in black; The play drew him in white. The reality is shades of grey. He was an imperfect man in an impossible (for him) situation. His words about love give the lie to it all. He selfishly and passionately loved Vienne. She just couldn't give him all of herself.

It's the play the Queen commissioned about Quigley, that describes him as a hero and avenger. It's been discussed several times in the story.
