It's much, much more tolerable to start thinking up reasons why someone may have deserved what was done to them, and get the universe back into alignment that way. After all: Duane was no perfect being. As far as Lemuel's concerned, everything he'd ever wanted was always handed to him on a silver-- no, a gold platter.
