The promotion talk helps date this pretty well, it's about a week before Duane's death. He liked having a family so much and really thought a woman would help Lemuel's melancholy, but the boy just stopped responding all of a sudden. So weird~

Something's eating him for sure. Swing by the discord if you'd like, someone's always keen to talk about Lem

Capsandnumbers

You'd think he would, but he loves Leysa so much he thinks that surely a wife would make Lemuel just as happy as his makes him. Also-- kids! Kids are the best!

Ashley

Thanks! That's insightful. I was just asking 'cause he should probably know whatever is up with Lem it's way past solving it with "you just need a girlfriend".

Flyfly

Absolute gold mine with this one. STOP. no.

Srećko

Family is just like that sometimes. My well-meaning mother in law chose the fucking funeral of her sister to ask her nephew (the deceased's son) when he's going to get a girlfriend. You can be close to someone and still bumble through interpreting their thoughts and feelings, however obviously inappropriate something may seem to an outsider.

Spider

Duane's great with strangers and he's even been very insightful and wise with Sette on occasion, but Lemuel? He just doesn't know what to say. He's actually going to try it again here in a few pages and you'll see how Lemuel masterfully shuts it down and just destroys him. Lemuel doesn't WANT to be helped. He thinks he's fine. He thinks he knows exactly what to do. Others easily think of Rector Adelier as the wise and powerful veteran, father, accomplished wright, son of Ssael and true patriot. But Lemuel knows him as a beloved, but bumbling, know-nothing, self-deluded, moral coward. You can't counsel someone who doesn't respect you in that way.

This might be my favorite page in the whole comic—the atmosphere, the emotional stakes, Duane’s hilarious facial expressions, the last few panels focusing on the movements of their hands—it’s storytelling magic!

I hope lady I escapes the khert just so everyone who helped kill duane gets fucked.

Therapists never work with family for a reason 😔 Waaay too much history and interpersonal baggage to navigate clearly or fairly. I think he's very well aware something's off with Lemuel, but knowing how to counsel him on it? Much harder.

CD

Thinking more of it now, does this mean Duane is just bad at his job? You know, Clerics are the closest thing such worlds have to psychotherapists (usually). Even if he fails with Lem - boy might just be too far gone - he still should probably be at least recognise just how bad situation is.

Flyfly

obviously lem is a traumatised, maladapted child soldier with a burning need whose quenching constitutes atrocities, and seemingly we are within twelve pages of that ultimate revelation, long-strewn in the comic but still withheld from duane, but: at 16(~?), they both joked about dicks. i don't think i've seen any wanktalk from the lemon of this era. what happened to you, dude

Spen Cyrrh

been there these last eleven years, pal

Spen Cyrrh

Lemon's reaction just screams that the business with the hounds is a running gag for Duane and one that will go all evening if he gets rolling.

Michael Stakely

They're just such... brothers. Unfortunately, brothers stuck in godawful social trappings! The flow of energy in the second row of panels, and the hands as another commenter said above, land so well.

Hmm… now I need to reread the whole book with an eye toward Lem…. There’s something tickling the back of my brain

Always cool to see you play around with different stuff. Duane's Thorns makes his hands extra expressive it feels like.

Stretch Andrews

Duane's bad at this stuff. He loves his brother beyond all reason and has no idea how to help him. Some of his efforts come off super cringe.

Ashley

Thanks, man. There are a few neat (I think) shots in this scene, I didn't want it to just be talking heads the whole time.

Ashley

Another reminder that Duane's been soaking in his own stupid self for a long time. If Lem had wanted to settle down (or felt that he could) then he'd have done it by now, don't you think?

Ladile

Drunk Duane is quite the goober.

Rifter

Love the hands in those last three panels Ashley. Feels like they're saying a lot.
