Drawing Duane on the ground on this page and the previous ones made me so sad. He feels truly dead and put to rest, and it made me reflect on what that living man's life was, what he accomplished, and all he missed out on by dying so young.

Our Duane is still around of course, but he finally feels truly severed from his family, his old life, and everything he lost. He's still highly motivated to help his people, but the old pain isn't standing in the way any longer of him living in the present, and reaching out to people.

So Duane's now both more dead and more alive than he's ever been in Unsounded. It's bittersweet, to me.

Ah, enjoy this calm dark page. We're going back into the heart of Port Morstorben for a while and it's all blue khert fire and red eels and magenta Anadyne heart and it's a cluster.

Haha, yeah. He's always tried to run low to the ground to make less of a target of himself. Old, weird habit, from days long past :)

Ashley

My guy Murph has a very unique run, innit? He leans a lot forward and kicks his back leggy real high, I notice. Noticed that running form earlier in the memory too...

CelebrenIthil

It would be fun if Duane will not able to fulfill his promise due to technical reasons. Like, if that was so easy, Murk could've slipped out through Boo holding the hole open. However, I do think they'll be able to perform the promised action.

Duke BG

Yep. Duane would never break an oath sworn by Ssael. Murk's not dumb, at least not today.

Ashley

ALSO it feels like a fun echo of Lemuel just before, making a truce with the tanner man and putting aside immediate feelings for the sake of saving a little girl. Heh.

CD

OOH I truly wasn't expecting Duane and Murk to find a truce so readily! That's a bit fun. And confronting the fear, and leaving the cloak with the body... melancholy and meaty and good ❤️

CD

Oh same! It's been interesting to confront the fact that some part of me has apparently been hoping he'd somehow get home again, but how could he ever fit back into their lives? Would 'closure' even help, really? It's what he was craving most on the rooftop, and that was Duane at his ugliest and most desperate. This is sad, but it does feel... right.

CD

Is the “by false gods slain” an oath of sorts? Did Murkoph have him swear on it because he knows it’s an oath Duane will honor?

it's been a long road to get here with Duane. we're all lucky to have been here for it!

metrocube

This has been on my mind most of the chapter. The fact that Duane probably isn't going to get any kind of closure or final goodbye to his family, even though he has to keep on "living" is heartbreaking. I keep thinking about him getting a chance to talk to Leysa, Miki, even Simon but it just doesn't seem feasible. They've honestly probably moved on, and we can't forget he's a walking sin in their eyes. Still, we can take solace in him helping those he has met who have become close to him. He can still find a new life in his undeath. Now go save Sette and her gang!

Rifter

Boo proving himself one of Sette's most capable gang members.

Luuuuuuu

Very good. Atagwe means finally or at last. Murk says: "At last, big man. This is the way."

Ashley

I welcome the cluster.

The Clag

Moya ssomun rish = “This is the way,” no? What’s the first part? I know we’ve seen “atagwe” or “at’gwe” before, Bastion says it as a curse, but I don’t know the translation.

Nope Noperson
