Two pages today. Fare thee well, little dikdik, there was no way he was going to let you walk out of here.

I don't ever think to blame victims of anything, since I figure it makes a lot more sense to blame the perpetrators, and I hate it when people are made to feel stupid for less than 100% ideal actions in dangerous situations – it just struck me as so the worst reaction to have that I had to work out why I thought she did it, but yeah, the other answer is sometimes you're scared shitless and you can't help it. The way that the handmaiden looked to the queen to fix it is just heartbreaking.

Josh

Interesting to see Ruck and Sonorie possibly aligned on meddling with people to pacify them

Capsandnumbers

Ruck probably would have ignored her, yeah. She had a little panic attack and couldn't keep quiet though, I wouldn't blame her.

Ashley

This made me think... I think the saddest part of this one is, well, thought process went: •gah, Ruckmearkha is awful, Bastion is right, they should hunt efheby to extinction •knowing how awful they are, why would you call attention to yourself by freaking out about his rambling? •oh sweet paper Jesus, it's cuz even with the irredeemable, malignant monster in the room, she still felt at least comfortable enough to freak out instead of cowering in silence because she felt protected by the aegis of Queen Sonorie - trust in gravity and stately decorum as an imaginary protective field. Oof oof oof.

Josh

That poor handmaiden has been wearing a (figurative) red shirt this entire time. But I am still sad to see her go. And just shows how primal Ruck is. I do wonder, if she would have kept quiet would he have let her be?

HandsomePenguin

Ah, Rusk, full of LOVE as always. I do wonder what was the plan Sonorie envisioned like. With all going to hell and beyond it's kind of hard to envision a working version (which is perhaps why I actually didn't see this revelation coming). As is it starts to feel like Maha is a certified face-eating-leopards party voter.

Flyfly

Squeaking! It cannot be loved! Ruck is so awful, I love these pages.

Stephanie Aldrich

I've seen a variety of opinions on the matter so far - love to see the discussion.

Ashley

Chea's little legs... Ruck why couldn't you have set aside for this

jaaama

What a line "walked to his grave with gods papered over his eyes" is. Evocative in and of itself but a nice eloquent resonance with the tendency of senets to call the modern religions "paper gods." I mean duh, but, still hella cool.

Josh

Poor Maha... I genuinely like the contrast between the absolutely HORRENDOUS things she consciences and her real care for people as both individuals and A People. Also, like, lbr. Bell had it coming just a little >>

CD

Hoo boy, the queen haters over on /co are gonna be vocal today.

Ben Dennard

If you ever do a reread, you'll see how obvious it was, haha. I didn't think most people would be surprised so I'm glad you weren't! There's a scene where Sonorie outright tells Ruckmearkha to go do the thing, and multiple panels of Sonorie looking waaaaay too guilty.

Ashley

I want to be careful not to sound like a Sonorie apologist, because the woman took some risks and absolutely escalated a situation that might have played out differently otherwise - but Ruck can't mind-control people. All Ruck did was give Bell personal revelation - proof to Bell that Yerta was with him. Bell could have rejected that at any time. But it was exactly the validation Bell had always wanted from his gods, so why would he? And away he went.

Ashley

It was definitely a bold and desperate move, but maybe she still has time to right this ship.

Ashley

He is completely a predator. If you run from him or even get squeaky or panicked, his instinct is to rip you apart. That's what he is.

Ashley

It's funny, I'm not even surprised somehow? I don't know what exactly my brain read to make this an expected twist though, haha. Maybe the overwrought comical evilness of Bell himself - like ohhh, yeah, makes sense why she let that go on for so long because the man was NOT subtle...

CD

Bell's actions are still his own. I imagine that Sonorie was just hoping to discredit him and did not think that his madness and bloodlust would escalate to the extent that it did. Otherwise.... she may thought that the potential death toll would've been worth it, if it meant securing her power. That said-- holy shit. This is... bad. Really bad.

JarJar

Man, the queens been juggling a lot of fires, it seems inevitable that she’d eventually drop one and set the whole tinderbox alight. Too bad when you do that as a monarch it gets a bunch of people killed. Stinks of fatal hubris to think she’d be able to use Ruck like he were any of her other pawns/tools.

Renee

She's the Queen though. Some dealing with her is required, if one wishes to do business in Cresce. Ahaha.

Jeremy Ball

Ruck is really laying it on thick here with the predator/prey dynamic. How much is it him intentionally reminding Sonorie of her place, and how much of it is him being, well, a predator?

jumanji-mongie

Well, didn't the Queen herself say that we do monstrous things for love? It all makes perfect sense. Also puts a new perspective on her grieving her sister's murder.

Ladile

Oh nooooo.... I should have seen it coming but... Goodness. Makes sense. Bloody, messy /"love" filled sense/

Ava

I'll say it again. Don't make deals with eldritch abominations!

Rifter

Ruck definitely wasn't going to let her go after she revealed that she wasn't in on the dealings between him and Sonorie. Can't have her betraying somebody he loves after all.

Michael Stakely

rip niper kid

Nikaleles

She made it further into the chapter than I thought she would.
