Added 2025-08-25 04:15:30 +0000 UTCI listened to this song on endless repeat while drawing the final scene in chapter 18, and got this image stuck in my head. Mathis marooned on the shadowed side of the moon and Matty secure in the crescent of light. I think this is one way Matty will think of his dad now; still here with him, but in the yesterdark, unable to engage with the light of the present even as they remain forever connected by Vienne and all she left him.

I've decided I'll keep to my normal update time every Monday here. Mondays are the worst of days, right? I'd like you to have a pleasant treat to wake up to on Monday mornings. Today it's the Quigleys, next week will be the Adeliers, and after that I'll look to you guys for requests!
Thanks for all the kind words on Friday after the last update. It still feels really weird for that book to be done, but I think I handle these things best by diving right back into work! I'm doing a few more commissions this week, lots of script work, and I'm hoping to feel comfortable starting to thumbnail the prologue the week after. If you're a writer you know one of the trickiest tricks is introducing new characters. You don't want to overwhelm, but you also don't want to underwhelm :3

Throughout the whole story I kept thinking "he should have more time" but then his palms split and I yelled out loud "HE SHOULD HAVE MORE TIME!!!" IDK what I'm saying here. I'm rambling. 2025-08-25 05:42:45 +0000 UTCNot for the first time I've said this, but when rereading the book (and how awesome is it that it is now complete and I can read the whole damn thing with its proper flow, hot cheese 'n fucking crackers) years later, my reaction to Mathis Quigley was a major indication of the way I'd grown (or at least changed.) When I started reading in 2011, he struck me as someone whose best feature was only that he was a great example of a well-drawn "Chaotic Evil" character. A scumbag who nevertheless felt like a real person, instead of the typical rendition of that kind of character: Johnny the Homicidal Maniac without the charm. (Not that anything so crude as the alignment chart applies much to Unsounded.) But rereading in, I think like 2019? - I just pitied him. He was so broken, and so consumed by self-hatred, and the worst part, which just made me pity him more, was that a lot of that self-hatred was pretty justified considering what he did to Vienne (and Matty, ultimately.) And then when Duane just wrecked him with empathy, saying he would've done exactly the same thing - just kinda made me think, how much of what we do is just a product of our environment and experiences? I guess what I'm trying to say is "there but for the grace of God go I."
