There's a superstition that the khert can't reach the baby to put in a soul, so a stormbringer slips in there instead. Sette rejects this outright; Jivi isn't nearly interesting enough to be a secret senet beast.

It's true! Once you understand your characters well enough, they write themselves! You just sit back and make sure they get somewhere worth the trip. Congrats on your story! :D

I just finished my first short story, and I finally understand what you mean when you talk about the characters being fully formed in your head, and you just Put Them In Situations and let them act naturally. It really leads to charming writing like Sette insisting Duane has been whittled down to only 35% dangerous here! By the way, Sette's own estimate of her danger level would be well above 50%. Perhaps even 1000% or 2000%!

Or is the type of person who'd be born at sea in this world more likely to be a hellraiser on land because dealing with the sea at all is already dicey socially and so on? How much of the superstition is observable fact? How much will the superstition around their birth play into their upbringing? Great bit.
