We did see Durlyne back in chapter 7, too, with Duane's murder, but I never pulled the camera this far back. And neither did Duane, he lived where he lived. Overall though, place is huge!

Ashley

Sure, they could have escaped, but a hitman who leaves witnesses behind won't be a hitman for long...

Conflicted about Jaer and Tree here; almost any other circumstance, I'd admire how Jaer still finished their job despite personal disgust. Once I said to friends arguing about a hypothetical crime one was daydreaming about, "No matter how much you disagree, you should always help with the getaway." Except for how it was literally child murder and they could've escaped without doing it. And yet.. smidge of respect anyway, with the part of my mind that just loves solidarity and camaraderie between criminals. (Though I believe our own real criminal demi-monde despises people who hurt kids as the lowest of the low.)

Ashley, I remember reading something you wrote or said in an interview to the general tune of "Why does everything think Unsounded is pseudo-medieval? I guess that's what I get for beginning the story in the wilderness." Gotta say, when I only had the first few chapters for reference, I wouldn"t have expected the world to contain this rad funky dystopian steampunk-adjacent Blade Runner-lookin' megalopolis.

Josh

It's some kind of food stall, I just can't decide what they sell :D

Ashley

I didn't think I needed to make the point on EVERY figure :) Better to save a giant shocked crowd scene for a higher impact moment.

Ashley

That's a great line of thinking, I just would never want to appropriate the word ghetto. It'll be important to remember that ghers are also divided by class, in addition to caste. Duane grew up in a very rough working class ghers that only admitted blue collar labourers and primitive craftsmen, and as a boy was apprenticed to carry on after his father in that regard. When his prospects brightened, he married to the much higher class ghers of financiers, clergy, officers, and fine craftsmen. Now that lower class ghers wasn't doing much to bolster its members' success but Duane's adult ghers was very protective, exclusionary, and high pressure in a different way. And the two ghers - even though they are both Soud - were not on the best of terms. One is considered peasants, the other is considered toffs.

The return of goblins to the comic! Even if only as a decorative lantern

PotentPinion

Interesting. Looks like they are breathing out DammaSmell

Flyfly

Boy, that's one way to ruin your day!

Spider

So, I'm curious. It seems like only some of the Bronze are picking up on our duo. Is that related to the varying lifespans/khert connection of the Bronze caste? Or are some of these people just not paying attention?

Benjamin

In that regard, is it correct to understand a ghers as a kind of inverse ghetto? Or like a ghetto union or commune? An ethnically homogeneous group pooling their resources, policing themselves and providing social services to members and engaging in commerce with outside groups but still technically formed by the prejudices and social/economic pressures placed on that ethnic group. Like a Soud ghers would be much more like a historical ghetto than say a Jet ghers but obviously it's not quite 1:1, as a Jet ghers might perhaps be more interested in pooling and maintaining Jet-created prosperity in Jet hands, more like a gated community rather than for protection?

Mister Scarecrow

Yeah, probably down here to visit one of the cheaper clothiers or rug shops. It's nice to get their money but no one's going to invite them out for a drink :)

Ashley

Wow, that appartment building(?) across the canal is huuuge! That really drives home that Durlyne is a real metropolis. Also, Bronze Ghers with two Jets smugly walzing through, I presume?

Reed Copperstrand

I hope those vliegeng are city-trained.

Ak-demiker

That's the Temple of Song, very important, you can see it from all over :D

Ashley

Are ominous towers stretching to the heavens just the standard for large, Kasslynian cities?

Ben Dennard

You know what's worse than being a child murderer? Being a whiny baby child murderer.
