The Staggering Bite

Adam’s arms were supposed to be transformed. That was the strength of his ability, his tentacles. While Don relied on the water puddles scattered across the battlefield, Adam’s true advantage had always been the direct control of his writhing limbs, perfect for binding and restricting an opponent.

It was the perfect moment to strike. Kai was locked in direct combat with Don, their clash absorbing all his attention. Adam knew this should have been the time to wrap Kai down tight and end the fight. But when he looked at his own body, confusion clouded his mind. His tentacles had vanished, his arms reverting back to their human form without his command.

What’s happening? Why isn’t my body listening to me?

Across from him, Don Tinge gritted his teeth. He couldn’t rely on Adam. Not now. Shoving the distraction aside, Don charged in himself. Water rippled beneath his feet, giving him unnatural speed, his body gliding across the flooded ground without moving his legs. His trident thrust forward, sharp and fast.

But Kai was faster.

The strike missed, and in an instant Kai’s clawed hand snapped around the shaft of the trident. With brutal efficiency, he yanked Don forward and slammed his fist into Don’s chest. The impact cracked like thunder, sending Don skidding across the surface of the water, his trident torn from his grip.

Even mid-skid, Don’s mastery showed. A new trident formed instantly in his hands, swirling with water. He hurled it with precision. But Kai twisted his body to the side, the weapon slicing past, and then shifted back into his wolf form. Muscles rippling, he sprinted after Don with feral speed.

“Come on… come on! Move, damn it!” Adam roared at his own body, swinging his useless arms in frustration.

But before Kai could close in, Chen appeared. He dropped from above, striking the ground directly in front of Kai, forcing him to skid to a halt. Dirt and water exploded upward. When Chen raised his head again, his eyes widened.

Kai had already shifted back, his form standing upright on two legs once more.

A fist launched at Chen with frightening speed. His turtle-like forearms snapped up as a shield, their hardened surface bracing for impact.

BAM!

Kai’s punch landed. Then another. And another. Blow after blow hammered against Chen’s arms like a relentless drumbeat. On the fourth strike, a sharp crack rang out.

Pain surged through Chen’s entire body, the shell-like surface fracturing under the barrage. Blood spilled from his lips, his strength faltering.

“Stay back, Chen! It’s too dangerous!” Don’s voice cut through the chaos. He caught Chen by the shirt, yanking him backwards, saving him from the next strike. At the same time, Don thrust his trident forward once more. This time he spun it, the weapon whirling in his hands until water burst outward in a violent ring, spraying in every direction.

Kai caught the trident’s tips with his hands, stopping the deadly points from piercing him. But the surrounding water crashed against his body in multiple places, slamming into him like waves of steel and forcing him back.

On the sidelines, Adam’s frustration boiled over. He swung his arms again, another opening presenting itself. This time the tentacles did appear, bursting forth with sudden force, only to slam uselessly into the ground between Don and Kai. The impact nearly struck Don himself.

“Adam!” Don snapped furiously. “If you can’t fight properly, then stay out of this before you kill me too!”

With three of them working together, they might have been able to wear Kai down, maybe even restrict him long enough to end the battle. But with Adam malfunctioning, his powers unreliable, the strategy was collapsing. And Chen, though still on his feet, was badly injured. The cracks spreading across his defensive shell proved it. He wouldn’t last much longer.

That left Don alone.

The thought worried everyone watching. Don could summon oceans of water, overwhelm enemies in floods, but fighting Kai single-handedly, with no reliable backup, was a dangerous gamble.

Adam, meanwhile, stared at his own hands in disbelief. His mind reeled. Why? Why isn’t it working? What’s happening to me?

On the sidelines, Gary narrowed his eyes. The pieces were falling into place.

“…Is it the bite?” he whispered. “Just like what happened to Xin?”

Through Tom’s research, Gary had learned something crucial. A Werewolf could transform an Altered into one of their kind through a very specific method: an Alpha’s bite. If the Alpha bit with the intention to turn, the Altered’s powers would begin to unravel. Slowly, day by day, they would weaken until eventually those powers vanished completely.

At that point, when the Altered had lost everything, a second bite could be given, one that would complete the transformation into a Werewolf.

It was a dangerous process, but Gary had seen it before with Xin.

But what unsettled him now was the speed.

The effects of Kai’s bite weren’t gradual. They were instant. The moment his fangs sank into Adam, his body began rejecting its own powers. His tentacles no longer obeyed. His strength faltered immediately.

Is it because he bit Adam while in his true Alpha form? Gary thought. Did that amplify the effect, supercharged by the full moon above, by the presence of so many Werewolves nearby?

If that was the case, then Adam was already lost. He could no longer fight. He was no longer an asset, but a liability.

And if Adam was gone… if Chen was too injured to contribute… then that left Don to shoulder the entire fight against Kai.

Gary clenched his fists. He had kept to the side until now, weighing his options, but as the reality set in, only one thought burned in his mind.

If this keeps up, I might have no choice. I’ll have to step in myself. There’s still something I haven’t tried, something I can do.
