Try to imagine how his experiences would have shaped who he is, shaped his internal thought-structures, and how they would color everything he sees in the world. Imagine what his capacity for compassion really is. Rough situations produce rough people. Conflict breeds callous. He probably has a limited perspective and understanding for anyone who isn't as tough as he is. We don't have to condone Rusty to understand him.
