SPOILD: The Last of Us HBO Season 1

Comments

Chernobyl is also great. Anyone reading this who enjoyed The Last of Us should also give it a watch.

Niel Druckmann and Craig Mazen specified on the companion podcast that the main theme of the series is love and how that feeling can often motivate people to do some not so great things. Through this lense, I felt this was a very strong through line in the series and all of the supporting characters and their stories were very much meant to prepare you for Joel's decision at the end. The show was just amazingly executed and tbh I was coming into it a bigger fan of the Chernobyl show than The Last of Us, of which I've only played Part 2. It's really exciting to think about how we're very likely to get 2-4 more seasons of tv this good! Druckmann getting a Part 3 game done while the show is going on seems really ambitious to me but of course I'd love to see it happen!

In my opinion the show was good but I had two main issues: 1. I found the Bill episode and the left behind one being a bit out of place and really slowed down the pace, they would have been better at the end or an whole side series on Bill. 2. This is maybe more controversial, but there was a lot of race swapping and it was very obvious. I consider the game to be open and giving a good place to diversity, but the show is almost saying that the game was racist. I may be influenced by the fact that in the last 3 years I cared about 3 shows (I don't have much time) They were all adaptation from masterpiece: Last of us, interview with a vampire and Foundation. These 3 shows had major changes in casting. My problem is that I consider that these works already give place to diversity (i do not object that foundations could be improved in terms of diversity)... This is where I am puzzled about the argument that Bill episode is great because it is a well made episode about a gay couple... My problem is that they are mostly preaching to an audience already ok to the cause... (they did not knew about the massive popularity of the show when they film it) Thats why I would have been much more open to a whole show on Bill rather than a prop... I feel that by changing shows that already have diversity they are just patting down on their back and not changing anything... To me acceptation would be much more about:this is a great episode about a couple (that happened to be gay)... In reality, the fact that the couple is gay in that case changed about nothing directly (beside being true to the story) Anyways, thats just my opinion, I have been working for diversity organisations for the past 10 years and I have a different BG. I don't use twitter or such... I still liked the show, but some scene hitted me way less than the game... Particularly, when Ellie and Joel talk when Tommy is suppose to leave with her and the last scene. For me the fact that we had to struggle with Ellie throughout a long Journey is at the core of the emotional attachment. The last of us is a long game and by the end I was tired, I felt the series cut corners in that sense... University and winter section felt very short to me. Last thing is I felt Joel was speaking a bit too much, some things in the games were felt but unspoken, thats why the game was great in my opinion. Good video ;p even if I don't always agree...
