1000 Patrons! (And a Sneak Peek)

Hi. This morning we hit our 1,000th patron. I'd like to say that I'm speechless, but you know I'd be lying.

And in my dazed and semi-confused state this morning, I decided to write the Afterword for Book 4. I've needed to do it for a while, but I've been putting it off in favor of writing new chapters in Book 5 instead.

However, December 1 is quickly approaching, and I need to release the B4 eBook for VIP patrons. So it was now or never, especially since the week of Thanksgiving is always so busy with anything but work.

My fans generally fall into three categories: the awesome people, the silent majority, and the assholes. If you're reading this, you know which group you belong to. (Hint: I'm the only asshole allowed here.)

The B4 Afterword is specifically for you, to say thanks. We've had an amazing six months, and you're a large part of that. You've helped make writing fun again, and I appreciate it more than you'll ever know.

So now, without further ado...

Author’s Afterword

Wow! Just… wow. It’s hard to believe that I started writing Book 4 more than ten years ago. So much has happened since then. Where do I begin? Well, I split with my former business partner, went back to school full time, earned a couple of degrees, started another company with new partners, and worked my butt off for several years. I kept writing Summer Camp throughout, but at a much slower pace.

To be completely honest, I wasn’t having fun anymore. A small but vocal group of “fans” were consistent assholes about my posting schedule. It’s free dessert, people! You get it when you get it. Most readers didn’t mind, but they were the (very) silent majority. A diehard group of real fans said thanks for every new chapter, and I’m grateful to all of you. You know who you are. But still, every time I posted a chapter I felt like I was rewarding the assholes or simply feeding the freeloaders who gave me nothing in return, not even a simple thank you.

That all changed in May. I decided to leave my startup and focus on writing instead. My attitude changed almost overnight. I made plans for a Patreon, but I told myself I wouldn’t pull the trigger until I had a least six months of chapters in my buffer. I wrote more than 50,000 words in May alone. For reference, that’s about three times my output for any one of the last seven years, and I did it in a single month. Um, yeah. It’s amazing what a positive attitude can do.

I launched my Patreon on June 15 and soon had a dedicated group of patrons who love the story as much as I do. I was having fun again and so were they. I kept writing at the new pace and banged out 48,000 words in June. In addition to new chapters, I posted hints and teases and sneak peeks. I was back to my TERBish self and loving it, but I had a problem.

I was only about halfway through the story I wanted to tell in Book 4. At that point a mega-fan suggested I split the book after Chapter 28. He also suggested a new title for the erstwhile Book 4: Wren. It isn’t very clever, as titles go, but I hadn’t thought of it. Still, I know a good idea when I see it, so Book 5 was born.

Once again, I’m probably a little too fond of my own writing, but it’s such a fun story! I never want it to end. However, Book 5 will be the end of Paul’s story. You’ll find out who dies and who he marries, and I’ll set the stage for the next story. I’m tentatively calling it Summer Camp: The Next Generation. Once again, it isn’t very clever as titles go, but none of you are reading this for the title.

I started my Patreon a little more than six months ago, and more true fans have joined every day. This morning we reached 1,000. I post a new chapter installment every week, along with plenty of other Summer Camp goodies. And I’m still writing and enjoying myself. I can’t tell you how good it feels to be rewarded for all my hard work.

I understand that not everyone can afford to pay a few dollars a month for quality writing. And some people simply refuse to pay for something they once got for free. That’s fine. I don’t mind. You’ll eventually be able to read Book 5 for free, as long as you’re willing to wait. But if you want access to the latest chapters and a whole lot more, you need to join my Patreon. No hard feelings if you can’t (or won’t). If you’ve read this far, you’re still a fan, and I appreciate it.

I feel a great sense of accomplishment now that I’ve wrapped up Book 4. I’ve spent more than fifteen years on Summer Camp and written nearly two million words. Two. Million. Words. Wow! Just… wow. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my all-volunteer team and especially Big Ed Magusson. He’s been my friend, alpha reader, and official source of motivation for many years.

Last but not least, I’d like to thank you. Whether you’re a fan who’s now a patron, one of the silent majority of free readers, or even one of the assholes, you’re still reading my stories, and that’s pretty cool. I wouldn’t be writing them without people like you.

So thanks again, and thanks for reading.

Thanks, Fabian. And yeah, hard to believe I/we've been doing this so long. But it's so much fun! 😈

Late to reading the afterword... I can't believe I've been reading Summer Camp for more than 10 years now... hell, I can't believe you've been WRITING Summer Camp for fifteen years and are still keeping the story alive. And, just for clarity, that is said (thought) with admiration and awe, not derision. I keep coming back to a couple of projects I've started and never finished in about the same amount of time as you've put out four - err, strike that, five counting Nereids - books in one universe. The characters flow, evolve, and grow but you've never deviated from the heart and soul of the characters we met in Book 1. That's incredibly impressive. I'm incredibly pleased that you're happy writing again, and thank you for allowing myself and so many others to be part of that joy. Those that can, do. Those that can't can at least help sponsor the dreams of those that can. At least I get to be a minor sponsor of something I love. :) Cheers.

Thanks, J.P. And you're welcome. Most welcome. Thanks for reading.

Nick Scipio

And on Thanksgiving, I'd like to say thanks for your work again. I know I've emailed you multiple times over the years to say it, but one more time doesn't hurt, right? This story you've created and are creating has been fantastic and well worth reading and re-reading...and probably re-reading again in the future, I'm sure! What a long, strange (and great) trip it's been. :) I'm glad you're finding it fun again because reading it has ALWAYS been fun.

Thanks, BT. TERB is a fun nickname I "earned" back in the early Forum days: The Evil Rat-Bastard. Most people say it affectionately. Well, affectionately as in, "He did it again, that rat-bastard! I'm gonna strangle him!" So... um... yeah.

Nick Scipio

Long time reader, first time poster: well done! And might I add, you are one great writter! One more thing: what does TERB mean? I have no clue. I have been searching and searching and searching...

I congratulate you on such an achievement! And I wish you continued success! ლ(́◉◞౪◟◉‵ლ

Thanks. And yeah (about the word count). I passed War and Peace as well... long, long ago.

Congratulations on 1,000 subscribers, Nick! Well deserved and well done! I am a newbie to the SC story, only finding it April 2017, but it has captivated me and I have devoured the story, the ancillary stories, and love what you do. Thank you and keep up the superb work!

First Nick thank you for all of your hard work. I thought you would like to know a fun factoid on the matter of the number of words you have written. Your 2 million words are double the amount of words in the first original seven Harry Potter novels . I thought that was a cool fact. Great job I'll be with you all the way to the end, and beyond in any new endeavors

Awesome! And congrats. I love it when my stories inspire someone to do anything they enjoy. Makes me happy.

Nick Scipio

I’m so glad you’ve found the fun again and are enjoying life. Reading for a while, I’m especially loving the art aspects which is part of the inspiration for why I’ve gotten back into photography.

Eric

I'll be with you till the end; you've got me hooked on the characters.

Feel free to spread the word. Or tell me where, and I'll let people know.

Nick Scipio

I, too, would gladly purchase published hardback copies of the Summer Camp series. I remember suggesting such an effort years ago on the old forum, only to have someone answer such a thing was unlikely because traditional publishers would be unwilling to print stories of adults having sex with young teens. On the assumption that that is still true, some place like Patreon is likely to be the only place we can read such literature while keeping Nick out of jail. That;s a worthwhile goal. I want to continue to read Nick's stories far in the future. After following Summer Camp for years, I was a few months late in joining Patreon - simply because I did not know it existed. I'll bet there are several thousand more people who enjoy great stories who would be paying fans of Nicks o Patreon - if only they knew it existed. Thanks, Nick, for providing not only great stories, but great insight as well. The writing tips and insider's notes are treasures.

I definitely consider myself a fan and have been around since nearly the beginning of Summer Camp 15 years ago. This has been quite a journey for me over the years and it even inspired me to start writing erotica myself, which I have published on Literotica and found myself in the "Hall of Fame" with several of my chapters haha. None of that would've ever happened without Summer Camp. When I started reading this story I never had a clue that anyone would put this much effort into constructing such a complex story for free that was erotic in nature. Anyway, I won't keep going on but I'm grateful that you found a way to be motivated about writing again and I will continue being a paying Patron for as long as you continue writing, whether it be this story or the 'next generations' of stories. Thank you again, Nick.

Well, it did take 6 months. I'm still amazed, though. We originally thought it would take years before I reached $2,000/month.

Nick Scipio

I don’t know if I’m ready for Paul to be married and have children. But everyone grows up. Not as exciting as teenager years.

Proud to be a paying asshole. I just try to give useful criticism, not bitching for bitching sake. I'm here til the bitter end however long that takes. Rock on Nick! 🍻

Jon Cary

No pun intended.

you don't need no stinkin' badges? ;)

Nick two things. First tanks for writing, I started with chapter SC1 and, if the gods help me, I intend to go to SC5-end. Second, a free suggestion, obviously worth its price. You should publish Summer Camp hard cover, along with the character's picture, as they appear in your tale. Should you, as a reward, you'll let me preorder the first issue. Thanks, best

I have been a fan since the beginning and have probably started over from book 1 chapter 1 several times. As a 74 year old, I look forward to the completion of this endeavor. I would like to think that I would be able to finish the next chapter also. Thanks for the great writing and engrossing story. Hard to find in this type of writing. I will continue to be a patron as long as I am around.

I still say THANK YOU NICK for the incredible story and characters - and I always will.

Well done Nick. Great stuff. Not surprised you hit a 1,000 Patrons so quickly. I'm sure that there are more people out there that don't know this opportunity exists to read your writing.

Woot! Gratz, well deserved, looking forward to SC TNG

If it's "official," where's my badge? ;-)

Big Ed Magusson

Well said and once again, very well done! I'm a paying Patron from the beginning and I still say THANK YOU NICK!!!
