Black's Beach

So, this pic is the result of a Staff comment about a pre-release chapter.

Black's Beach is near La Jolla (where Christy's parents live), and it has a clothing optional section. I didn't know any of this until recently, but I'm not about to let a fun setting get away.

You also get to meet Brooke in this illustration. She's Christy's best friend/girlfriend from high school. You'll learn more about her in Ch14 and she'll probably make her first appearance after spring break, around Ch22 (if my current outline holds).

Till then, you'll have to use your imagination. You're okay with that, right? 😈

Enjoy!

Is that Christy lying down in the sand casually splayed displaying her promised land right in front of Paul? What a very exciting view. What a very lucky guy. I'm really jealous.

"Brooke" is a variant spelling of "Vanessa." Yeah... that's the ticket! LOL! No, it's a mistake. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll fix it in B3 so it's Brooke instead. Back when I wrote B3-Ch27, I didn't have any fixed idea of who "Vanessa" was. Now that I'm deep into B5, Brooke is a much more 3D character, so I'm going to keep her new name.

Great picture and an amazing story Nick. Maybe a continuity issue though. It the text with the picture, you mention Brooke, Christy's best friend from high school. In book 3 (Kendall) chapter 27, about 3/4ths of the way down the chapter, the paragraph starts "Christy and I did not talk as much as Trip and I did". In the middle of the chapter, it mentions "Mariko, from Japan; Vanessa, her best friend from San Diego". Christy had only been in San Diego for a couple of years we learn in an earlier chapter, so perhaps Brooke is from before San Diego. But, since the picture is from La Jolla, I thought I would inquire.

Seems like lots of people know way more about Black's Beach than I do. (Really, I'd never heard of it till recently.)

I spent many a day SCUBA diving off of Blacks Beach while a student at UCSD. Alas, the scenery was never as good as it is in Nick's imagination. But I am surprised Nick missed that the IM Pei designed Salk institute sits on the cliffs above Blacks, extending the north arm of La Jolla canyon into the building atop the cliffs.

There are cliffs in this picture?

Another thing about the area. Not only is the a hang-glider/glider port at the top of the cliff, Torrey Pines Golf Course is right there overlooking the beach. There was usually a LOT more people there, too.

The artist has captured the look of the cliffs over Black's Beach very well. One of the times I was there, a section of the cliff collapsed though there was plenty of warning so no one was injured. Kinda spectacular though.

Have been there several times. Feels great to lay out nude or to walk around and enjoy the scenery. The shaved look had not happened much when I was there ((been a few years) but had just started - mid 70's. I'm sure it would be more enjoyable now.

I absolutely love La Jolla. Dotar Z, I was going to say the same thing about the glider port. I spent several hours above Black Beach in 2005 watching and taking pictures of the gliders. I didn't realize there was a nude beach below, until I ran into an Asian couple with spotting scopes watching what was going on below. :-)

I didn't go there often when I was living down there (late 60's), but I NEVER saw scenery like that. And we all know why the glider port was above that beach.

Beautiful location. Surfed there in the 60’s. Last time there was the 70’s and by then the scenery was even better since UC San Diego is above the cliffs. On a aviation note, the artist should add a hang glider in the sky since one of the earliest glider port is also above the beach.
