Long vs Short Installments?

B5-Ch1 has a lot of installments, 23 including the Prologue, but it's an extreme case.

Most chapters will be 12-15 installments, posted over the course of a month. So, about 3/week.

With that in mind, here's my question:

Do you want smaller posts more often (each scene will be its own post/email)?

Or do you want longer posts, but only once a week (multiple scenes in each post/email)?

(This poll will end on June 30. You can come back and change your vote till then. - Nick)

FYI, I shortened the poll. It'll end Friday, June 30 at midnight. The response so far has been pretty overwhelming (obviously). So I want to finalize the poll and rejigger my posts for next week.

More like a complete chapter every 4 weeks. Twice that rate is a MUCH more serious commitment of my time. We'll get there eventually, I hope, but let's start slow and build up.

I like the idea of once a week multi scene post, it means you've got more time to get them how you like, rather than rushing to get post's up. It also means I get read a more continuous run of story.

What I would rather get is a complete chapter every 2 or 3 weeks. This getting a short piece every day or so is not interesting to me. Just my likes.

The problem with that is that edited posts don't resend email to everyone. So you have to KNOW to go check the updated post. By contrast, new posts are sent to everyone in email as well.

Nick Scipio

FYI, you can put with what you have each week in the same post. Update a single post with the same file that contains the old and new added content each week. That would cut down on the raw number of posts and give us a single place for each chapter, but at the expense of clarity when something is officially complete.

Personally, I joined VIP to get the entire chapter in ePub... so I wont bother with the short versions until the entire chapter is out. I also wont be hurt if I only get one chapter /month...

I'm thinking of doing a hybrid. Post the chapter in weekly installments, with an extra complete-chapter post at the end. So the impatient folks can read more frequently, while people like you can simply wait for the complete-chapter post. And do it at the Early Admission level, so you wouldn't have to upgrade. I think that strikes the right balance. Hope so, at least.

Nick Scipio

Yes, VIP Pass holders will get the complete chapter in ePub and RTF.

Well, I have a bit of a balance act here. What works for me would be a single monthly chapter post. But that would leave a lot of dead air for most patrons. So I want to make enough posts to keep people's interest, but not so many that individual installments are too short. Like I said, I need to find the right balance.

Nick Scipio

Honestly i would almost prefer weekly progress reports with little snippets here and there and then just a release of the whole chapter in a single post. Reading the chapters cut up into bits i find to be less enjoyable than the whole thing at once.

at the end will you do like you did for 28... post the completed chapter for download?

I don't mind the small installments; if I don't want to read them that way, I can always wait until the end of the week and read the ones that were posted during the week. I think that you (Nick, that is) should do whatever is easier on you and your schedule/style.

Yeah, I agree, especially about the multiple clicks per chapter. Bugs me too (probably more than you all) because I sometimes go in and change tags. Besides, I have to create the damn things in the first place. It was a good idea in theory, but... maybe not so much in practice.

Nick Scipio

Once a week is a good posting length. Though I don't like having to keep changing pages to continue reading a chapter. It sorts newest first but if I'm behind I have a bunch more clicks to read in order, and it's annoying
