Patreon Declined Your Payment?

Patreon screwed up. I don't know how and don't really care. But they're asking you to help fix it. I have nothing good to say. 🤬

Anyway, this is what they said (emphasis mine):

Hi folks, as you know we’re noticing an unexpectedly high number of payment declines. We’re sorry for the frustration this has caused and we’re doing all we can to help creators get paid by working with our payment partners and continuing to retry payments. Some of these issues were caused by external forces, and others by our efforts to create a stable and global platform as we grow and invest in our capabilities.
To ensure payment goes through this month, you can let your patrons know they can update their payment method to a new card, PayPal, or call their bank to confirm the charge as non-fraud.

If you've been declined, chances are good it's Patreon's fault.

My first inclination is to sit tight and wait. Let them try to fix it before you go through the frustration of doing their dirty work for them.

But...! If you're in a hurry or just feel like tinkering, here are some things you can try:

Update your payment method. Here's a link to help: https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203913769-How-do-I-update-my-payment-information-

(Remember, don't use PayPal if you can avoid it. They censor adult content.)

If that doesn't work, call your bank and tell them to clear the charge from Patreon.

Sorry for the disruption. Hopefully Patreon will fix it before you have to. But I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, I have nothing good to say about PayPal. Glad you fixed your problem (<em>their</em> problem, actually).

Nick Scipio

I had been using PayPal from the beginning, but over the weekend I got an email from Patreon stating that my pledge had failed and to retry. Multiple retries failed. Since I was in a hurry, today I gave in and updated my payment method to a credit card. I had remembered this post but had not remembered the part about avoiding using PayPal since they censor adult content. That's disappointing. Anyway, problem resolved.

I think some laws have changed on both sides of the pond. My bank said that they can't create an exception, that I would have to approve the charge every month now. I put it on my regular CC, and that seems to have worked just fine.

Nick, I checked this morning and all is normal. The payment went from pending to a charge on my card.

I woke up to a fraud alert from my BoA CC, they'd approved the charges but sent an alert. About my 6th or 8th month on patreon so I was surprised.

Michael Maskalans

No clue what they're doing. Patreon hasn't told us (creators) <em>anything</em> directly, either before they started charging or after it became clear they had lots of problems. You can imagine my reaction.

I got a fraud alert and approved it and it went through.

My bank told me the payment came from "Patreon* Membership" instead of "Patreon* Pledge" and that set off my bank's fraud alarm. It has apparently been fixed (I just got my receipt notice), but given the *REDACTED* they pulled a while ago, this sudden, unannounced change is strike two. I would advise creators to set up and announce alternatives in advance so if they strike out, we can still support them.

I have been debited for my pay't and have a receipt from Patreon also.

Yeah, I got a call from Wells Fargo fraud department this morning too, after they'd put my card on hold. Thanks Patreon! :)

No problem here, all Patreon payments went through as normal yesterday. UK based, so maybe why.

Ex Cathedra

I have my receipt from paypal that mine was paid at 12:03 Am this morning. I also have a receipt from Patreon stating the same.

My yesterday notification says it was successful

My card was declined. I had to verify that I approved the transaction. I was also contacted by the fraud division of the bank. They said that Patreon tried 8 times to get it to go though and failed which triggered the alert to the fraud department. Also, since it came from Great Britain, that triggered an alert. So everything is okay now.

AKA Patreon decided to go cheap with a credit card processor and screwed everyone up.

I have Got a receipt for this month payment , so i do assume everything is ok

So, I was notified by my bank about this, Patreon was making attempts to charge me, but the CC processing company was overseas (UK), so the bank was denying it. I was talking to both my bank and I had opened tickets with Patreon about it. Patreon basically told me they had processing partners all over the world and it was that simple. I didn't open up my card to allow it to charge from overseas, and I see that my processing for this month came from California. I have no idea what they are trying to do.

I got an email receipt from Patreon showing that all artists that I support (by name) were paid. Too soon to post to my checking account. Steve H.

Nick, right now my bank credit card shows the payment as pending which is not unusual for a charge on the first day. I will keep checking daily to ensure it isn't declined by the bank. Since this is the best value for the money I will ensure you get paid somehow. Right now it looks like a problem with Patreon.

I tried to update Patreon (card exp date changed) cud not update not. BUT 'think' I enrolled again. Anyway bank shows I paid but got got message that it failed. 'Think' both true and old date failed and new took Bob Crocker

I've not run into this yet but when I read the email, it sounded suspiciously like a phishing email. Just an FYI, Ask the reader just to go the Patreon site and do not include links to update things.

I didn’t know that about PayPal. I’m using it for Patreon now for several things, including Summer Camp. So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed.
