Happy Birthday to Me

Here's a bonus illustration for you, courtesy of Big Ed Magusson.

He sent it to me back on August 9 (my actual birthday), but I didn't get around to sharing it until today. Sorry. You'll survive.

Anyway, this scene is a sneak peek from a side story I'm working on right now. It has a brilliant working title, "Brooke's Story." (Yeah, yeah, I suck at titles.)

It'll probably be a novella by the time I finish, 30-40,000 words. I'll publish it here when it's ready, later this year.

The story is set in 1985, and architecture geeks can tell you where it takes place (based on the background, above).

Sharp-eyed viewers will also notice that Brooke is wearing a chauffeur's outfit, so that should give you something to think about when you imagine the first couple of action scenes.

Last but not least, I feel like teasing you, so I'll "answer" the question about why Paul and Brooke are alone together... wherever they are. Two words: Hans Hollein.

Post in the comments when you think you've figured it out. I might even confirm a few guesses. Then again, I might not. Gotta keep my TERB muscles in shape.

- Nick

* Someone always asks, so: TERB = The Evil Rat Bastard, i.e., yours truly.

Happy Birthday sir!

Of course there was skiing in the Alps as well as well...

Brooke is picking up Paul and Christy upon their return from a Spring Break trip to Vienna so that Joska may host his young protege at the Huntington Library for the presentation of the Pritzker to his good friend...

He is unlikely to have won it in 1985, since he's still in school.

Answer to the riddle: Paul wins the Pritzker Architecture Prize so he's in LA to receive it? Happy belated B-Day

Thanks. It was a weird one. Not bad-weird, just... different. Fun, but different.

Nick Scipio

Thanks. I hope to be around for a long, long time.

Nick Scipio

Happy Belated Birthday, Nick! Hope you enjoyed it.

Happy Birthday, Nick. Have a lot more! We want you around writing and entertaining us for years to come!

Happy Birthday, Nick! Hopes for many more!!! cheers

Always do😉

I'd also add Union Station and, of course, the Eames House.

Nick Scipio

I guess you'll have to read to find out. 😈

Nick Scipio

Well, it's my birthday, not Paul's. So... yeah. I'm gonna be rightfully selfish about this one.

Nick Scipio

I like the LAX theme building in the background. Let throw a guess out there, Christy is already in San Diego and she sent Brooke to pickup Paul so she could have a little alone time with him before they all get together

How about the fact that the sign says "Nick", not "Paul"? ;-)

Oh, well! Hollein’s design for the Disney Concert Hall was superior in my opinion to Gehry’s. Cathedral of the Angels was also designed by a Pritzker award winner. Neither would be at the top of my list for a L.A. architectural tour. If you find yourself in Los Angeles, try Carroll Avenue. When you described Sayuri’s house, that’s what I thought of.

No, the other direction. (And thanks for the b-day wishes.)

Nick Scipio

Thanks.

Nick Scipio

Nein.

Nick Scipio

The Theme Building FTW.

Nick Scipio

Does it have something to do with a Mickey Mouse operation? I know, I’ll just have to keep reading. Happy belated B-day!

Belated, happy birthday Nick.

Vien?

Makes sense they're at the LA Airport, given Brooke's from San Diego.....

Jonathan Frieman

The building in the background is a masterpiece of Mid-Century Googie design. Seriously. Google it. You'll see.

Nick Scipio

And a belated thanks. Only, not really. The belated part, I mean. The thanks are real. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Nick Scipio

Merci beaucoup.

Nick Scipio

Heh. Well, it is what it is.

Big Ed Magusson

Bonne fête / happy birthday

Also, I don't think Christy is the wife :)

I hate people who say things like this - latching onto something which is hardly even tangential to the main point - but, I am going to be THAT guy now: BMW's in the 80's didn't have headlights like that.

I don't recognize the background structure, but I speculate that he created the design. Possibly Brooke and Paul were together to attend the awarding of the Pritzker Prize to Hans Hollein.

Happy belated birthday, friend of mine
