Early & Ad Free: It’s Starting To Look Like A BOAT! Building An Aluminum Catamaran Part 4

Ahoy Delos Tribe! Part 4 of the build is ready for ya, and it's another super interesting one! This week's topic is all about how we position the plates and weld them into place, a task that is actually wayyyy harder than it sounds. But the cool part about it is once we get going, the progress is INCREDIBLE to see! Every day she is looking more and more like a boat, and it's blowing us away!

By the way, in case you missed our post a few days ago, if anyone is planning on going to the Annapolis Boat Show, we have a special Delos Tribe discount on tickets. Use this link to purchase them and you'll get a sweet deal and we get a little bit of love into the Delos 2.0 build fund. https://secure.interactiveticketing.com/1.39/d8c949/?promo=24DELOSSV

We hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Sending love from Sweden!

Also, not if but when you find a leak on the soak test, I would recommend doing either a dye penetrant test or an eddy current test to really narrow it down. Both are cheap to accomplish. Dye penetrant is easier to learn and understand. Eddy current I would use if it was in a critical area, like where the prop shaft goes through the hull.

jpiland73

where can a person get one of those mental health shirts dan was wearing. i like the style and color.

carolina beacher

My dad had a great question... How do you know of any leaks or bad welds before launching?

Anthony Deaan

That would be interesting! Is it sturdy enough for lifes dings and divots?

Michael Williams

Good job, coming along nicely, suggestion for the Interior, have FOLDING Tables, folding Beds, to save room for something els, Architect always Have Great Imagination

Sailing SV JOURNEY

Hey awesome! Let us know when they clear customs 🥳

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Patricia 🙏 Really appreciate your kind words.

Sailing SV Delos

There has been talk of filling the hull with water to check initially. Could be interesting to do. We have some giant rain water tanks behind the shop 😉

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Ben and Suzanne! Dan is building a boat, but he kindly put it on hold to build Delos 2.0

Sailing SV Delos

In general Kazza and I mostly agree on design stuff. We want the interior to be lighter than Delos. We’ll still use wood but instead of mahogany’s it will be lighter, perhaps oak. Also it will be veneer applied to foam core to save weight!

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yep, I constantly have to mentally check myself while she’s upside down 🙃

Sailing SV Delos

Yep, good eye! That’s exactly what we did 😉 Took about 4 hours but way cheaper than a new piece!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for your kind words Robert, sending you our best!

Sailing SV Delos

Watched tonight and as always a wonderfully edited video. It’s so entertaining, and you have our attention, we’re mesmerized by how precise measurements must be and how skilled tweaking is applied to bring the panels together for hull shaping perfection. All that said, and this isn’t to patronize you Brian, though we are patrons LOL, You exhibit the qualities of a leader willing to learn from those skilled in areas unknown in oder to grow in knowledge to achieve the goal but also with the mind to protect and care for the precious cargo you will sail with namely Kaza and Sierra. You continue to impress me and that came through in tonight’s video. I’m looking forward to saying hello at the Annapolis sailboat show.

Robert Palumbo

Reminds me of my old days with my ship repair business. We had a 40 pound sledge hammer we used with wedges and dogs to fit 5/8” steel plate. We called it the “fuck up hammer”. Haha.

Greg Zivic

Fabulous video. She looks so beautiful and powerful!

CATHERINE HACKETT

Can I guess what you did on the piece that was backwards? Did you cut and flip and then reweld? You might have had to do some shaping, but from the few angles it looks like it might have been possible? Thanks for the videos and the progress! Right down my alley, except I was in aviation not boat building. Enjoy Annapolis, to bad we won't be able to see you at the boat show, and meet and greet again this year. Maybe next year.

jpiland73

Hi Brian & Kazaa - great videos! Is it disorienting to have everything upside down and turned around; port is starboard and vice versa!? Like driving on the other side of the road! Second, are you designing the interior to be dark wood, nautically moody, or a blonde and sunny approach? Do you both agree or each lean to different preference? Enjoy the good Baltic weather you have now! Joy & wellness to you all!

Michael Williams

Two questions: Is Dan building a boat as well and how is it coming. And, how do you test for water tightness on the welds. Cheers from eastern Pennsylvania. Love these videos!!

Ben & Suzanne Morrison

loved this episode! the music selections were 🔥. I take for granted that your videos will be awesome, but now I'm realizing how next level this is. despite being so different from storytelling the sailing scene, you're nailing it! so many plates in the air at the same time and you produce this quality. I'm thoroughly gobsmacked. respect! 🥇👍🏻

Patricia

The interior yes finally wow, been waiting to see it, nice progress 🍾🥳

Filip Udovicic

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Barbara Whiteside

Thanks so much Colleen, we definitely will! And yes you are absolutely right, both are so special in their own way, we've so been looking forward to both 🥰🥰🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Haha we've def known some good Dan's over the years too!

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah it will be great to know the ins and outs of the boat so well before we even start sailing...and learning to work with the aluminum like this will be super beneficial once we're out there needing to fix stuff on the fly. It's been exactly the experience we were hoping for...being able to learn and be hands on, but still having an absolute pro team to keep things moving along and make sure it's all done to the highest quality. We're so stoked!

Sailing SV Delos

Woohoo 😎 I guess you will be surprised just how many parts D2.0 has 🤪🤪🤪 BTW my hats are on their way from the US👩🏻‍🦰👩🏻‍🦰👩🏻‍🦰nuts, absolutely nuts…but a must have. Talking of Brotherhood of People ☮️

Jeanne H. Mathieu

As someone who is not handy around the house at all, I was already amazed at all the skills you have when fixing Delos. It looks like you are adding a bunch of new skills for the new boat.

Mike Medina

I started making a sculpture out of clay, but then I realized it's SV Delos Friday and I need to hit PLAY! It seems you guys are making a sculpture out of aluminum! And, Kazza, you have a job cut out for you! I would need the boat to be finished before I could plan out the interior. But then I've never worked with 3D CAD drawings. Finally it is so fun to see Sierra enjoying herself at the play ground! Boy, what energy she has! 8 - | LOL PS - It wasn't clear how you "fixed" that aluminum part for the back area of the boat. Will we learn later how this problem was resolved?

Scott C. Wise

every Dan I know are such cool guys what is that in a name

quack 2000

Have fun with MorMor and at Annapolis, totally opposite energy in those spots, hope they both feed and energize you in different ways!

Colleen Balch

Well sending that owner all kinds of good and sustaining energy. Solo projects are more than twice as hard.

Colleen Balch

We've partnered with Nanni Marine Diesel for this project and they're supplying us with a N4.80 which I think is pretty cool. Kazza is working with a custom cabinet maker in the gold coast that has lot's of experience building lightweight boat interiors so that's going on in parallel although we haven't showed it yet. Finally, I know it sounded like we said "Amel" but it's actually Mel (Dan's wife) from Stradbroke yachts that helped us create the renders :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Nate, absolutely 100%. I'm really excited to take what I've learned about keeping Delos running over the years and apply that to the design of the system in Delos 2.0. There are some amazing things that Amel did that we'll carry over, and some that I think could be improved. One example is the grey water system. I love the concept of having no thru-hulls all grey water on one system. I don't like the idea that it drains into a tank and needs to be pumped out. With this design we can still have a common grey water system but exit at a thru-hull just above the water line, so no pump to break and clean. One example, there are many... But I think it will be super cool.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Colleen, yes it was sold to a person from New Zealand. He flies back and forth between NZ and Aus to work on the boat for a few weeks at a time. His goal is to get her seaworthy enough to sail her to New Zealand where he can finish everything up, so most of the progress is happening on the inside. But, being by himself and only spending a few weeks here and there on it makes it a fairly lengthy project.

Sailing SV Delos

They are super talented people right? So fun to learn from the best!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Bill! Ha ha good questions. There are various ways of testing all the welds, including filling the boat with water and seeing where it leaks. There is also x-ray (super expensive and way out of our budget) and die-penetrant testing. The draw back with this one is if you have a leak then it actually contaminates the hole so you then have a bunch of clean up work to do before you can fix. If we use fresh water we can just dry her out and fix. I think we're gonna dedicate an episode to this so stay tuned :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Lowell, yep we have a running list of items we're passing along. Considering there are thousands of parts and we're the first to build this particular design I'm surprised there isn't more! Brian

Sailing SV Delos

We call those items dogs and wedges in the US also. Brian, did you pass on the info about the mismarked plate to the designer? I'm sure he would appreciate it. Karen, have you used Sketchup? It might allow you to download the boat's design dwgs so that you can draw your interiors on top of the structure. Watching Sierra grow up is a joy.

lowell mccormick

So a couple of comments and questions from this episode. First off, Sierra brightens up every episode, she is so cute! Your stand in apprentice is much better looking than the standard one, my opinion though. LOL! Now for the questions, I know that Dan is an expert welder, but how are you going to make 100% sure that the bottom is water tight? Where will you source the interior builds and engines? I heard mention of Amel, are they part of Delos 2.0 as well?

Bill Dapp

Incredible to watch the process of taking sheets of metal, cutting, shaping and fitting….to make an amazing Delos 2.0 ! Everyone on that team has some crazy cool skills and I’m hooked on every video.

Michael Williams

Hey! So, the other Stradbroke 60’ keeps just sitting in the lot… I look for it every video on your b-roll shots. It looks like nothing’s happening with it. Do you know what’s going on with it? Have you met the owners? Delos II is gonna lap it pretty soon and take the lead!

Colleen Balch

You’ve been very active in maintaining, modifying, upgrading and general fixing of Delos over the years, do you feel your time in the yard here as part of the early build is going to leave you comfortable taking on the same level of diy efforts in Delos2?

Nate
