Early & Ad Free: Visiting Brady & Blue + The Coolest Hatches In The World! Building Our Own Boat Part 13

Ahoy Delos Tribe! This week's episode will be a fun one for many of you that have been following along from some of the earlier chapters of our adventure. After 3 months in Australia our visas are expiring and it's time to get out of dodge. Our plan was to head to Sweden to spend time with family and also keep working on the renovations of our little house on Mormor's property in Sweden, but we figured if we were going to be trekking to the literal opposite end of the world, we might as well take advantage of this time to visit my brother Brady and his partner and crime Blue who are such a deep rooted part of our life story after spending a decade on the high seas together. It was a bit of a whirlwind and we had soooo much fun, but in the blink of an eye it was time to continue on to Sweden. Besides working on our house and getting in some quality time with Mormor, we also had a little side quest while we were there as we visit the birthplace of what we think are the coolest hatches we've ever seen! We take you to the factory to see how they are made, learn the backstory of this family run business, and show you what proper Swedish innovation looks like! We hope you enjoy this one, and we'll see ya tomorrow with another little update with what we've been up to in the shop this week!

Sending lots of love and big hugs to all of you!

Thanks for the explanation Brian! Happy Holidays!😊

Lee Pottle

So cool seeing you visit Brady and Blue and love your little house in Sweden!

Marisa Conner

Hey Lee, I think that escape hatches get a bad wrap. I spoke with a few manufacturers and they said there are typically two things that cause failure 1) Improper installation. The tolerances for these hatches are much different than normal hatches. For example the Rutgerson ones require a perfectly flat surface with a tolerance of less than 1mm. 2) The second most common failure is the boat flexing more than spec'd at the place of mounting. Basically OEM's don't beef up the structure enough at these key areas which leads to excessive flexing and twisting in the structure around the hatch since it's a high-load area. So yes, on some hull types I think that closing them off is a good idea!

Sailing SV Delos

Hahahaha totally I think every parent knows this moment exactly πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Sailing SV Delos

We had the zoomies in this one for sure πŸ˜‚ Glad you enjoyed this one, it was a bit of a smorgasborg to put all the pieces of the story together as we did soooo much. And thanks for the feedback on the design pics, will try and include more visuals like this to make it all easier to picture!

Sailing SV Delos

Glad you enjoyed Tom, Sweden's such a special place!

Sailing SV Delos

Ahoy Ray, thanks so much for the very kind words. It has certainly been a labor of love, and we've been enjoying the process so much! Of course it's been full of challenges but we are really just beyond stoked with how it's all coming together.

Sailing SV Delos

Yessss she definitely has that special smile! And totally I could live in that factory, such amazing people and I love the innovative mindset they really value!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Patrick, we certainly have our moments although we don't always film those πŸ˜‚ But yes it's been a grind but super fun and rewarding to see so much progress on both the house and boat! And time is most definitely traveling at warp speed!

Sailing SV Delos

Are you placing those hatches in the inner wall of the hills. Possibly a term for those hatches. Should maybe be called suicide hatches. Who was it Parley Revival made an episode.😊 Regarding the reason he chose to weld and glue them permanently closed.

Lee Pottle

I enjoy all the energy you two have! Surviving the long flights and then jumping into another project is a tough gig. You both seem to handle it well. Enjoy your youth as time has a has the ability to hit warp speed and you will wonder how you reached 70 so quickly. 🀯

Patrick Murray

Great episode with lots of progress all around. My lingering question is about Electrolysis. How will you contend with that on this new vessel? Seeing the problems that have cropped up with other sailing channels that have some electric, what can you do to negate the problems that will arise?

Emily

What a whirlwind episode... really cool catching up with Brady & Blue, and then hellooo Mormor! Sierra's super-wide smile and positive energy is your family trait. 😁😁😁 And OMG that factory is a dream... bringing me back to decades of my life. Awesome design work, and the involvement of customer feedback is huge in quality management. I remember trying to word customer surveys in order to get constructive criticism... not easy, when you'd rather not have them focus on the bad points.

William Flower

What a gorgeous factory at Rutgerson's! Those hatches are going to be fabulous. I know Andy Schell loves their blocks. The house is coming along nicely and I know being next door to Mormor is the best! You had mentioned Ran Sailing in your last episode. I follow them, too. Do you ever get to see them when you are in Sweden? I know you visit Andy and Mia when they too are at home base. Such fun to see Delos 2.0 coming together!!

CATHERINE HACKETT

Hey Bill, the whole thing can just be slid right out the stern. I’d only need to undo the splice in the aft which is accessible via the aft seating. So it’s quite easy to inspect and remove.

Sailing SV Delos

Your mastery of electricity is amazing. I did enjoy last week's episode where you ran all the lines for the 48 volt run from the batteries to the engines. My question, is, how did you test it? The last thing I would want it for the deck to be welded over and then you find out there is an issue. Also, what if there is a break. How would you fix that if the aluminum deck is welded over it?

Bill Dapp

Hello, Brian and Kazza. It's been awhile since I last commented. Know that I have been following with each episode. It's so incredible to witness what you and Kazza have designed in creating DELOS 2.0. I can only imagine the time, thought processes and creativity that you have put into her design specs. Also, it is heartwarming that you able to share with us some snippets of your "family time" both in the US and Sweden. Wishing you following seas and fair winds. Kindest regards, Ray Lehman

HAVING NEVER BEEN TO SWEDEN IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THE VIDEO OF THE CITIES FROM THE AIR. TAKE US ON MORE OF A TOUR OF STOCKHOLM AND MORMORS LOCATION.

TOM PASLAY

This was a zooooommmmiiiiii episode πŸš€πŸ›ΈπŸ›«πŸ›©οΈπŸ›³οΈπŸš€from Continent to Continent to Continent….speedy Gonzales…. Great videography and editing as well as the subjects. Top notch Delos Crew 😎😎😎 PS Liked the pop up pictures of the boat design when you werd walking through. Easier to immagine how it will beπŸ‘€

It's great to see your Sweden home coming together and giving great warm vibes. I spoke to Marta in Annapolis about how lucky she was as a grandparent to have her Generations spending mega time right across the yard .... now and into the future. Your love for family always shines. It was not enough Brady and Blue time on screen, as the withdraw from the large crew days still lingers. Maybe you have enough to go back and create a full episode in Tahoe. The Bradster has dirt bikes? in 2006 ... I had 3 Yamaha Enduro's (225, 250 '78 2 stroke, and 350) in the shed with the 2004 Triumph 600 Daytona and 2006 Bonneville, all tagged, insured and running. My days of Motorcross are days of Future past. Only the 2014 Bonneville (at the Pathron's Party in Naptown) is left to race with the wind. Keep 'em flyin

I had to stop the video to leave a comment. As a parent seeing your moment of "technical difficulties" brought back so many memories. I was laughing so hard I started to cough myself. That was some fantastic editing!

Andrew Graham

Sierra with a Grateful Dead tee shirt! Very nice indeed. What a wonderfully positive piece.

Dan Moss

So exciting to see your adventures continue.

I LOVE Sierra wearing a Moomintroll dress (shirt?)! So cute! Was that a birthday present from MorMor?

Colleen Balch

Watch Time! At 2:18 I must sat that if any one conduit it's Brian! Then at 4:33 we Pick Up (in) Truckee with Alex Blue and Senor Brady. Sierra gets to ride a big horse named Red with Alex who's Blue. Don't you get purple when you mix Red and Blue? Hmmmm But still, . . . Yee Haa! Next we visit Cruisers Academy (CA). : - ) At the 7:00 mark what were you sailing on? I understand that CA has one or two Catalina 22s. Is that what that sailboat was? My own sailboat is similar to the Catalina 22. Then it's Sierra's Birthday! Yea! 5 years old - or is that 5 years young? LOL BTW - I found out recently that I have some Danish ancestry! So I am part Scandinavian. At 13:55 you are at Rutgers(on) which is also university in New Jersey. LOL And now we know where the hatches for Delos 2.0 are being hatched! No egg shells involved. And now we know where some grommets or cringles come from. At 18:00 I know about those plastic pellets! I once worked at a company that made machines that would feed that kind of pellet into the "process" that melted them down and fed them into the molding machine. : - ) Those flush vents are amazing! I'd love to see one up close. At the end there Sierra did snot sneeze any thing out of her nose. That was CGI ! WoooHooo!

Scott C. Wise

Love those hatch covers and the vents are cool don't want to stub my toe on one.. but fully sick.. love.. achew bless you sierra.. ..

Go guys.. live your work
