One thing I have noticed about Catamarans is that you spend a lot of time forward while at anchor. It always has a breeze and the views can be epic. Have you considered lounging (with sundowner) options for Delos 2.0? Maybe built-in seating like on the seawind 1370? You know the important questions … ;) Can’t wait to see the evolution of Delos 2.0, I am so happy for all 3 of you.

2024-02-14 17:53:39 +0000 UTCIt will depend greatly on what the mechanical coupling involves. Transmissions are, in general, like 60% efficient (I think). At least a couple of advantages I see to the series hybrids: • Modular: You can easily replace components (like the motor, drive electronics, batteries, charging, DC-DC converters, genset) because the interfaces between them are fairly simple and easy to adapt: wires. • Generator can run at its optimum speed an efficiency, whereas in a direct-drive diesel, you have to adjust the throttle to adjust the output, resulting in a much wider range of efficiencies, rather than always being at the optimal. • Generally, well-designed electronics rarely break down or wear out. They're virtually silent and vibration-free, requiring only cooling (which any combustion engine will also require). 2024-02-13 08:58:03 +0000 UTCIn the video they're using bifacial panels, which would not help in your case (panels laminated onto the side of a hull). But what's interesting is that the vertical panels have two advantages: better capture of early and late sun, and because they're vertical, they tend to be cooler than horizontal panels, which makes for slightly better conversion efficiency. I think in the context of a boat, it may be an opportunity for more solar power, which in a hybrid or electric-drive boat can reduce you dependence on diesel.

Just when I thought it was time to pop the burgers on the grill would be cold from a gust of wind blowing it out..... But then again gas is a good backup for the induction cooking should our electrical system fail. So I will see how it works and if necessary conjur up some sort of a shield. It costs $250 per month and gives us unlimited data in port, and 50GB of data on the open ocean. If we need more open ocean data we just flip a switch in the app and pay $2.00 per GB extra, which is plenty for downloading podcasts and checking weather. So far it's worked great for us! 2024-02-12 22:24:58 +0000 UTCAhoy MR. BIGG! Thanks for your kind words :). The additional space will be nice for sure, but of course it always has a tradeoff. Delos 2.0 is also the same length as Delos (53', 16 meters) but will be about 3 meters (almost 10 feet) wider. From what I have experienced is that catamaran slips are usually 1.5x a similar sized mono hull slip so there definitely is a premium. Of course this is not always the case but if you take up 2 slips you can expect to pay a little more. Actually though if. you consider we very rarely go to docks it shouldn't be that much of a hit on our budget. The last time we were at a dock was almost 1.5 years ago for my circumnavigation party. 2024-02-12 22:23:36 +0000 UTCAhoy Mark! thanks for your kind words, yes she should be a go-anywhere for a long time off the grid sort of boat, definitely not a harbor queen :). Actually most of the details regarding the sail plan and rigging are not shown on those renders. They are all on separate 2D drawings that specify all the blocks, where the sheets and halyards run, winch sizes, etc. It's actually quite well specified but there are some tweaks I still need to make here. I went down a rabbit hole the other night of doing research into different furling systems. One of the things we absolutely love on Delos is the ability to furl from the cockpit in nearly any condition without going on deck. This is made possible by the in mast furling which has worked spectacular for us. However, a cat gets a lot of power from it's main sail so a low-roach in mast furling sail probably wouldn't be the best option. I was researching boom furlers and still have a lot to learn about these. I have heard both positive and negative things. I suspect that this is another entire topic for a video as I'm sure we'll get lot's of good information from everyone out there once we start posting! But it's really fascinating to learn about and I'm having a blast :)

You are correct, the design so far for the structure has been purely focused on functionality, IE nailing the specs and structure. But very little thought has been put into the coziness of the interior from a design perspective. Kazza and I actually did a little brainstorming the other day just what about makes us feel cozy about the arrangement on Delos. How the use of wood and textured materials blends together to make it feel like a home, rather than an ultra modern furniture showroom. I think that is a trend in modern boat design that we don't necessarily feel like we need to replicate, although the current renders are basically just that! It will be interesting now that we are happy with the structure and shell to start doing some design work on the interior elements. So much to do, and all very exciting! Stay tuned as we'd love to have your input when we start putting thought into this.

2024-02-11 10:26:31 +0000 UTCHey Brian, I’m not sure how it would look, but since you put that strong attachment point on the roof for traveler, what about making the boom longer to gain sail area you lose from the triangle shaped sail when you have in the mast furling. You wouldn’t want the foot of the sail that long with a conventional sail, but it wouldn’t matter with a furling sail.

You could gear up when dry inside but put it in the locker when wet from outside. I'm sure you'll figure something out 😜

The aft bulwark is 600 mm wide and 2.3 meters long so we have space set aside for the tanks, compressor, BCD's, etc. So I think it will be enough. We'll also have doors on the aft cockpit side so gear can be put in or taken out from either side. That's a great idea about a ventilated/heated locker for foulies and maybe even dive gear. I'll note that down. Probably with direct access to outside so we don't have to drag wet gear inside....

I'm just thinking of our passages and how we often sit at the "helm" but very rarely actually steer with the helm. it will be interesting to see if it feels like we're separated from the elements too much, or if the openness of the windows to the forward cockpit will provide that feeling. I think it's just one of those things we're going to have to experience. It would be possible to put a helm outside with the steering system I have chosen so I know it is possible :)

We think they are in the right place but won't really know until she's built and we have the rig up and can really check out site lines. I've asked for all the hatches and windows to be marked (rather than CNC cut) so we can verify placement for everything before we cut them out.

2024-02-10 23:49:24 +0000 UTCHey Katie, you have some great thoughts there! We really debated having the platform raise and lower, and even took a look at the one on our friends Lagoon 50. He said that it has broken a few times and the boat is pretty new. He also said it was pretty heavy.... So we opted to just have the platform fixed and instead lift and lower Maggie onto it. We still have some fairly decent sized swim platforms on the hulls so getting into and out of the water should be ok. Not quite the same as a giant lowering platform though..... :). Yes, there is absolutely two bunks in the kids room. One lower and one upper. I think we'll get a feeling for the space after she's built and see which one we want to be permanent vs. folding. But yes, definitely a hangout for Sierra and her sailor kid buddies :). Thanks for your support and sending lots of good vibes your way!

But on the cat hull we are limited to 1.6 meters overall, probably less once we have insulation and everything. It is possible to widen it but then I feel the hull shape starts to bulge out and takes away from the sleekness. Always a tradeoff!

But when we go to sea we'll lower it down onto the platform and lash it down. The bottom of the platform is integrated into the underbody struts so incredibly strong and the same height as the bridgedeck so it should be as out of the waves as possible.

2024-02-10 23:16:22 +0000 UTCHey Rick, Interesting.... I did consider a series hybrid but here are my thoughts. Sort of rough and in no particular order... I actually think the parallel hybrid will be more efficient when motoring long distances. For example when you go from Mechanical -> Electrical (generator) -> Motor (electric) -> Mechanical there is a bit of loss. I think I remember it being 12-15% depending on the efficiency of the generator and the electric motor. So I felt if you are going to run the diesel for long range, then why not just hook it right up to the shaft in a traditional way and get the same efficiency. Also if you think about it how reliable our diesel has been on Delos the thing just runs and runs and is very dependable. So my thoughts are having that system in parallel with the electric motor allows us to do a few different things. We can be a totally electric boat (no diesel and run off batteries), totally diesel (just run off one diesel engine), or we can divert excess mechanical energy from the diesel to the electric motor and spin it as a generator to charge batteries or power the fully electric hull. I think it's a topic worthy of an entire video so if you have any other info I'd love to hear it and maybe incorporate it when I film that? Either way it's a super cool system and I'm having a lot of fun researching it :)

Couple questions, observations, the renderings you shared don't show any mainsail or foresail sheet winches or headsail furling winches. What are your plans with regard to them given the forward halyard (and reef line) handling station? Also are you considering rigging the mainsail to permit down wind reefing without the need to head up, especially since the forward halyard station/cockpit will be more exposed to breaking seas than a traditional rear/ center cockpit. Or are you envisioning so sort of windscreen for that area? Looking forward to Delos 2.0 future evolution.

2024-02-10 18:50:22 +0000 UTCWhat you’ve planned looks smart, and other people have better input on all the nitty gritty stuff needed on a boat, I can offer a big picture question: have you guys already thought about where you will primarily hang out and how you’ll make it cozy? I get a lot of functionality vibes from the design, but I have a hard time imagining people in there. In my mind its going to be very dark, compared to the outside world, under that roof. And you’re surrounded by a lot of metal. Also in terms of your youtube channel I feel that the cockpit of Delos always offered the visuals of a sailing adventure, with little specs of light and shadows on people and details from all the little lines, backlit canvas etc. Maybe theres a way to get sunlight in the back in a controlled way as desired? Make some elements only from semi-opaque materials rather than the 100% opaque aluminium? Might also be worth thinking about the materials other than the aluminium in general, since they’re going to contribute a lot to the coziness of your home. Anyways, as usual I have full confidence in you guys that you’ll do great, hope I could inspire some constructive thought!

One essential for us would be to have enough space for all the diving gear at the back of the boat (is it where you plan to store yours, where the tanks are on the render?) One idea: a heated hanging locker for the wet/foul weather gear and to hang the diving gear while drying/before storing.

I havbe a 49‘ Aluminium Monohull and some installations that need lots of attention (fuel filters, V-belts, electrical systems) are hard to reach because of > 30 years of constant boat „updates“. I think if you plan two „technical compartments“ in each hull where you can comfortably work on all installations that should be a huge improvements. a new build allows you minimizing the need for boat yoga, you know what I mean :-)

The cleats might work, but if you have to use a drouge in big following seas, you might want a beefier attachment point, as wide as possible. For a cat, that's one of the safest ways to ride a storm at sea, but the boat needs to be rigged for it.

The outside galley will be great, especially on hot days. One question is the mainsail reefing. These big, full batten mains can be hard to handle. I love that Kaza could reef the sail on watch at night by herself, without leaving the wheel. Brian’s ultimate chance to nerd out!

I am sure Brian thought about this next one; engines, generator, transmissions & compressor room access so they are all easy to work on , parts and tool storage area with a workbench and the ability to get to all systems with hatches large enough so that you can pull and replace any of them if need be without cutting any holes! On my own trawler I have to be a double jointed bilge monkey to get to the starboard side of my diesel....and if I have a leg cramp or worse I am in deep trouble down in there! Thanks so much for sharing this process, it is fascinating for us grease monkeys!

That is one thing I’ve always found appealing on larger cats- the concept of a true water-level platform seems both ultra luxurious and practical. The outdoor kitchen is fantastic, but the dive storage area facing Maggie’s platform? *chefs kiss* I truly appreciate the re-arrangement of the kitchen. It seemed like there was so much “wasted” square footage in the original design. The breakfast bar setup is a winning option. In the “kids cabin” is there potential for an extra fold-down upper berth? Perhaps making one of the two Berths tuck away to become desk space of some sort? I can see a potential future desire for teenage-type hangout space. It is so nice to see you both looking so positively excited about this project! Even with all the challenges you know it is bringing- you seem to be brimming with joy. 💙

It’s basically a continuous line with blocks at either side of the traveler that is moved back and forth in either direction. Search on Anderson Line Tender for an image. I would just run the loop to the cockpit. Thats the plan anyway 🙌

Right now she is on 2 nd circumnavigation…. This hull is an updated design with some improvements so our thinking is she should be as capable as her pedigree suggests. It will be different for sure but I think change is good 😊

2024-02-09 04:12:06 +0000 UTCSomething to consider, a gray water system. You collect water from your shower and sinks in the bathroom and use the water for your toilets and deck/anchor wash. It is a simple system that does not require any filtering but saves a lot of fresh water just for non potable uses. This would allow for fresh heads as well instead of saltwater heads. Also, I love the design changes that you guys have made. I can't wait to see it on the water!

That way you can really immerse yourself in it and look at the design at scale and get a good sense of the changes and how they work and function in practice. 2024-02-09 00:21:55 +0000 UTCHey Guys. Very exciting. The outdoor sink and grill is a must. I use mine all the time. Think of the heat you aren't putting inside! My Seawind has a grill that raises up with shock arm assist so it can stow neatly, but get high enough to exhaust the heat put if the cabinet when cooking. I doubt you will add propane back, but a nice flattop electric would be perfect. I only wish I had more counter space to filet those bigger fish easier. You might want to consider what kind of hand rails/grabs are incorporated into the roof edge. There are times you may want to hold on moving fore and aft. Also, build padeyes into the bow corners. You may want to get creative with downwind sail rigging with that wide beam. Cheers.

But that looks like a great place for Sierra to have a dog! Also, please make LOTS of nerdy videos about the parallel/hybrid electric-generator powering!! I first heard about this idea a few months ago and have spent way too much time thinking about it!

I assume there's a runoff somewhere so it doesn't overflow into undesirable spots? What about adding a few trolling pole holders in the back? Zatara had a large custom shade cover cut for the center/bow of their cat. They seem to love it... might consider how a large shade could be integrated beforehand?

2024-02-08 22:54:19 +0000 UTCIf it's still early enough in the process, I'd like to discourage you from a parallel hybrid approach, and encourage a series hybrid: electric motors, batteries, and genset. Far less mechanical complexity, more modular, easier to maintain, and likely more efficient.
