Early & Ad Free Access: What's Wrong With Delos??? Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 450

HERE WE GO!!!! This is our first episode dipping our toes into all these exciting changes we've been chatting with all of you about lately.  Before we go further into what Delos 2.0 will be, we're gonna take a deep dive into what we WANT it to be...after a decade and a half living aboard Delos, we've developed a long list of LOVES that we definitely want to carry on into our new boat, and NOT-SO-IN-LOVES that we absolutely want to improve upon for Delos 2.0.  This was a super fun video for us to plan out and film, and I think some of you are going to absolutely love it!  And for you boat owners here, we want to know...what are your top love/hates on your boat!  Hoping to get some good inspiration/words of wisdom as we get closer and closer to finalizing the design.  We just departed yesterday to the Tuamotus, so we will have nothing but time on our hands the next days to read your amazing responses πŸ€“

Sending love from the open ocean from all of us 🫢

β€œPivotal” I see what you did there. 🀭

Lon Pribble

Great show! Really looking forward to the build. Make sure 2.0 has a place for mor mor!

Lon Pribble

Hey Mitchael, we actually wrote all these things down way before. Probably a few months ago but we didn't actually get around to filming it until very recently. So it was dreamed up before, yet filmed after :)

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah, we didn't specifically mention that but on Delos it's really been a good addition. She is much better at going in straight lines than turning in tight quarters in a marina so the bow thruster has been pivotal. I think with our plans for dual electric engines incorporated into the hybrid system we will be able to drive her around like a tractor to pivot, one in forward, one in reverse, etc. At least that's what people that know a lot more than me say!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Patricia, sending you our best!

Sailing SV Delos

Yep, we sure do. One in each cabin!

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yes absolutely! :)

Sailing SV Delos

Great job turning a list into a fun video! I’m curious about the insulation trade off with having a lot more windows πŸ€”

Patricia

What about the bow thruster?

Jim Tanner

Launching my 40’ tri was the most stressful day of my life! It takes a while for the dust to settle, and really enjoy what you have. But you two look incredibly happy with your new home, and to finally have a home!

Mark Gumprecht

BTW do you have carbon monoxide detectors?

Chris Marchi

A radio room!!!! With a ham radio.

Chris Marchi

I HAVE BEEN ONBOARD WITH DELOS ALMOST FROM 1ST. VIDEO. OK! SO A NEW BOAT OR SV I GOING TO NEXT TIER TO HELP OUT. THANK YOU MIKE FROM MIMS. PS. I MET U-ALL POMPANO FL./

michael

This has been a long time in the making since you guys first put DELOS 2.0 out into the universe so cool that you are now making her a reality the planing and fun is just beginning can’t wait to watch her come to life cheers ❀️⛡️❀️

Lisa & Claude

dolphin cam evolution! My favorite!

Krystal Couture

If you're compiling the "wish list" for Delos 2.0, don't forget the pizza oven! (See episode 160 @ 23:40). :-)

Jeff Fischer

Since Delos has so much amidships due to her shape, has anyone ever studied changing up the hull shapes (they don't call them pontoons, right? - I'll call them nacelles like Star Trek) to be teardrop shaped like a pair of monohulls?

Michael Williams

Yeah for sure. We are are flush with storage now.

Sailing SV Delos

Yes I have a lot! I do think its doable even with the space we have.

Sailing SV Delos

I hear ya, we love the asym on Delos too. The one benefit of our downwind rig over a kite is we can reef it in any weather on the furler….

Sailing SV Delos

WAAAAAY out of our price range. Nice boat though!

Sailing SV Delos

Curious, was the video filmed before or after the decision on the new boat was made?

Mitchael Pingrey

What the heck is wrong with the Garcia 60? Just wondering why you would need a one off design?

Jesper Slattengren

Gone with the Wynns made a similar β€œwant/need” list when they started to consider a new boat. Like you, they put a lot of effort into it. You might look to see where your needs align by reviewing their list. DD

Doug Daggett

Great to hear all your thoughts on Delos, and your new boat! You talked about liking your downwind rig on Delos, but a lot of work, and more hardware than you need on a cat. You won’t need a pole anymore! People are using asymmetrical spinnakers mostly now, but a conventional symmetrical spinnaker works great on multihulls, and is more versatile. Better for dead downwind, and you can reach up fairly high. On my trimaran, I would use the spinnaker by itself, no main and it was a very well behaved sail. I always put two sheets on each corner of the sail, and lead one to the bow, and one aft. This lets you move the sail to any position, and gybe without leaving the cockpit.

Mark Gumprecht

Absolutely, along with the fillet table. I always hated seeing Brian and crew chasing a slimy and flopping 50 lb. fish around the aft deck with sharp knives.

Jim Bickerstaff

The three top items for going to sea: storage, storage, ... and storage. You do lose a lot of all those bulkhead cubbies when you go with windows. You will need the same storesload capability at least ( time for super-thinking caps... ).

Michael Williams

Way ahead of me I see! Love it. BTW, it seems a few episodes back that you started featuring Kazza in longer segments which added an interesting facet. I do enjoy her grabbing the camera and narrating things that are important to her and Sierra stuff that we dads would really never understand :) . We get a different perspective through her eyes. Thank you for everything you do, and I hope to catch you guys somewhere in person before it is all over.

Jim Bickerstaff

Coconut splitter is a great idea!

Michael Williams

Have you thought about dry vs wet exhaust for the engine on the new boat? Especially if you’re planning some high latitude and river exploration?

Stuart Arrdventure

Ha so funny you mention this as I didnt touch on it in the video but absolutely yes! No ziptying to the bulkheads. proper wire runs make your life so much easier in the future.

Sailing SV Delos

Awww thanks Jeff that means alot. Cheers to you and thanks for the support.

Sailing SV Delos

Absolutely yes on the fishing setup. Also have plans for a built in coconut splitting and fish filet station πŸ₯₯🎣. And a dedicated dolphin cam on sliding tracks so Kazza doesn’t have to mess with that long awkward pole anymore at the now. πŸ˜‰

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for your support Chris!

Sailing SV Delos

Yes absolutely πŸ‘

Sailing SV Delos

Things are progress rapidly, if solid state available when we get to the stage that would be amazing. My gut tells me it will take a little longer to hit mainstream.

Sailing SV Delos

Yep, very similiar. Right at the base of mast to keep weight at center of CG and out or ends of boat πŸ‘β›΅οΈ

Sailing SV Delos

Have a safe sail!

Bob and Michelle Murray

Hey Guys, Love the 2.0! Brian, have you nerded out about using solid-state lithium batteries yet? One of the things I really like about the Garcia was the amid-ship anchor rhode storage....what does that look like on this Cat?

Brandon DeYoung

Design for the least amount of maintenance. Design to make regular maintenance items easily accessible.

lowell mccormick

Such an amazing video! My belly hurts from laughing for about the full 35 minutes! And so stoked for what's coming! Building Delos 2.0 will be an incredible journey to watch!

Chris K

Wow - very exciting, and I can tell you guys are bubbling over it. I am curious, have you considered pulling necessary cables to the cockpit and common quarters to install some fixed GoPro cameras? If set up on remote, you could quickly grab video from those areas instead of someone always having to operate the camera. It would be great for parties and keeping up with Sierra's antics. Second, I expect you are going to make fishing a bit more comfortable and convenient. A couple of rod holders off off each pontoon and a fold up fish-cleaning table would have to be on my version of Delos 2.0! I wish you all the best and can't wait to see it come alive. Thank you!

Jim Bickerstaff

I admit that when I saw this was 35 minutes of boat design, it would require much fast forwarding. But you know what? I watched every minute of it and was enthralled. You guys could film a video on ditch digging and make it interesting to non ditch diggers. You are just so genuine and funny at the same time. This video didn't even have the cuteness factor of Sierra and it was still very entertaining. Good job!

Jeff Mack

These are great Pros and Cons and the evolution of the boat will interesting to see. Two hulls mean two times the storage Kazza. Woohoo!

Emily

Along for the fun of the ride. Safe and smooth passage, enjoy!

Colleen Balch

First I'll watch, then I'll think, then I will probably comment. : - )

Scott C. Wise

Excellent video, this will really help people make decisions on boats especially liveabord bluewater types, I'll let you guys get back to welding aluminum;-)

FreeWilly

Love my Friday morning hot tea and Delos routine! Thank you and this is fun to watch. Knowing y'all will have tons of great feedback, ideas and will keep a rolling detailed design "must have" list is brilliant! Here is something I wish my Beneteau Trawler had and it would have been so darn easy during the build...but they go cheap with production boats: Multiple Conduit runs with multiple access points. In fact make them oversize (like at least 3 inches), with smooth interiors and gentle turns for cables, wiring, solar panels, new electronics, Starlink, hoses, future upgrades, antenna's etc. Obviously be careful in-between water-tight compartments. Cheers, Skip
