Ohhhh man, we CANNOT WAIT for you to watch this episode 🥳 It's been quite some time since we've been this giddy to share a video with you! If you've been following along with all our updates here, you already kinda know where this is going...but the pictures simply didn't do it justice, and in this week's episode we're gonna take you on a much deeper dive into it all....We're going to take you on a little journey through more of the backstory and evolution of our dream of Delos 2.0, give you an impressive look at the work that Dan has done so far on the original design that sparked our interest, and get down and dirty in the work shop and test our hand at some welding! We are dying to know what you all think!!! Leave us all your thoughts in the comments 😁
Lots of love and gratitude from all of us,
Brian, Kazza, & Sierra

He he yes so many questions! I love it :) I think we need to do a live Q&A soon to answer these properly, but in short: Rainwater capture is built into the roof structure. It's a very cool design! The side plates were extended 4cm above the roof line so it's built it which I'm very excited about. For the deck I am researching white/offwhite stick on pads. There are a number of brands out there that do marine decking like this to reflect light and give you traction. All the sail controls will be lead forward to it will be just a matter of walking to the forward cockpit to make adjustments. I'm also talking to Selden about possibly creating a system very similar to Delos for the reefing and furlers which would be cool. That is a definite YES on the AC! More answers to come, I should figure out a good time to do that live Q&A, would be a lot of fun!

Hey guys! So sorry to hear about that. We've had quite a few friends struck but so far we have been fortunate in that regard. I actually don't know how the aluminum would react. From what I remember electricity is always looking for the quickest way to ground, so I think it would tend to travel on the outside of the structure to the water. I do believe if you were inside you should be well protected, similar to the sheet metal in a car. Definitely an interesting point to research more on though!

Yes, absolutely! I am a huge fan of hydronic heating systems. I was doing research on the Refleks heaters. I really like their simple design, and they have a few of them that will heat hot water for hydronic circulation as well. With an inline electric heat exchanger for when you're plugged into the dock this could be a very cool solution.

By ourself we are thinking it's a 4-5 year project.... Probably 2 years if done at a yard I would guess.

The deck will definitely need to be painted or stick-on surface out there that reflects heat. Still researching options but anything white-ish! As for the sides, well this will be mostly indirect light when the sun gets low in the horizon. Since the boat will be fully insulated I think it will actually stay much cooler than Delos with her hot decks that radiant heat inside.

Ha ha I'll tell her :). That hull (#1) was actually sold to someone that lives in NZ. We decided to customize the design to meet more of our ideas. So we will be cutting the metal this week and starting to weld soon!

Yep, it's very exciting to be able to design the systems EXACTLY as I want them. Wire runs, pluming, conduits, everything can be planned in the 3D model. And done properly instead of an afterthought!

Hey John, yeah we agree! I think's it's a very cool design. Feels like "us" :). The hull sides will be raw aluminum. The top sides we'll need to do something though like you mentioned other wise they will burn our feet like Maggie did before we painted her. Still looking for a good solution there. Exiting decisions to make!

So freaking cool. I am a home builder and have been searching for boats the past few years. I think you have convinced me to build a boat! Congratulations and best of luck! with your skill set and work ethic, I know this project will be a huge success.

Delos does Waterworld! I think it will be amazing. I am imagining you all smashing through the waves onto the next grand adventure. Totally prepared for whatever may happen, but also SUPER comfortable. What will you do for -rainwater capture(?)-making sure the decks aren't hot AF to walk on/live under (even container ships are painted), with the indoor helm how will you tend the lines(?), will you have hatches that open forward like the Wynns(?), will you have AC onboard(?), will you have a dedicated school zone for the Nugg's(?). So many questions...

The metal catamaran hull reminds me of the Mariner’s catamaran from Waterworld. Which is cool in my book. 😎

we love our Seawind 1260 Makai but were struck by lightning last year and it is a painful journey. I am interested in aluminum for this and worst case scenarios with grounding or dragging in storms.
Question - have you found any information on pros and cons of lightning strikes with aluminum? I can’t find anything in terms of insurance or if it acts as faraday (assume yes) and if it may pose some danger if walking or touching the hull at the time of the strike. I wonder if insurance may also like the tougher hull material for coverage amounts.
Look forward to seeing your build and possiblilities for us one day to maybe jump up to the same boat!

Hi Kazza and Brian,
This is way too early, but maybe something for your wish/research list. Do consider water borne heating for the new boat, instead of the traditional forced air systems. Not only can you heat water from both diesel and electricity as well as getting it as a side effect of running your engines, but the heat it produces in your living space is much more comfortable. If you really want to take it all out, you might even put pipes in the floor and have under floor heating ;-)

Wow - so awesome! I am so excited about this welding, boat-building project of yours! Dan is awesome! And you guys too, will become master welders by the end of this! I would help in a heart beat! I am working in a boat yard now on a gentleman's 53 foot mono hull, sanding and polishing weld joints on stainless 1" railings, and it's so easy to see that a good welding-job is critical to the final outcome. I know it's a bit different with aluminum but the weld, matters! Really enjoyed this video - thank you!

"little"? I guess I'm not doing my job right. Okay, here's one: What do you do if all of your dog's/cat's hair falls off? . . . . Not sure? . . . . Well it's quite simple, call your vet for a referral. : - )

What’s the time frame? If you do it yourself vs a yard vs a boatbuilder? How long have these guys been working on it cause it’s still pretty far off.

You can design in some really nice conduits. Fishing lines and ability to plumb. Think of all that experience you gained. I really look forward to hearing how you make design changes that make boat maintenance suck less. Super exciting stuff what a journey! o7

The deck will be painted or covered in as light a color as feasible, similar to what we did on Maggie. As for the indirect sunlight on the side of the hull we understand the insulation will handle it. At least thats what we are told by others….

RAD Fn boat! What finish will you do? Talking out loud, a two-tone could be very cool, im thinking similar to an SUV where the roof is one color and the body is another- maybe the roof is raw aluminum and the base is a wrap or painted? I know the roof would get hot and hard to walk when messing with sails, but the concept is that the raw aluminum is used in the design as an accent color. When just the aluminum used over the whole or the larger potions, could get a bit too much? Just a thought!
To build it yourself or not, seems like the question at hand? daunting task! While Im sure you all can get it done and what an acomplishment it would be, IMO not worth it in terms of vaule of time. Let the experts do their thing. However, doing some of the interior fit out would be better use of time and could be fun. Would love to see sketamitc plans/ layouts!
very exiting stuff!

It struck me while watching, I know the design of Delos 2.0 is for around the globe sailing, but it would be perfect for the Chesapeake too! Shallow draft so you can get in and out of gunkholes, protected prop and keel for crab traps, and insulated for winter sailing... Hmm... think I have new goals for my anticipated lottery win. LOL :)
