EARLY & AD FREE: A LIFE CHANGING Decision 🤯 ... SV Delos Ep 452

Hey hey Delos Tribe!  We're back this week with another doozie of an episode...it's part 2 of our trip to Australia and we have a very special visitor joining us!  The designer of the boat actually flew in to meet with us, and we get the chance to pick his brain and learn about the evolution of this design and what makes it so special.

We learn about the sister ship Elcie which was the first aluminum catamaran  that he designed!  This is SUCH a cool boat and eventually purchased later by Sea Legacy, some really incredible activists and photographers that we had the pleasure of meeting on two occasions in the Caribbean many moons ago (and who may or may not have enjoyed a night of sampling Delos' finests moonshine with us onboard 😂)

Our crash course in welding and working with aluminum  continues, and we weld up a whole frame!  It was a super satisfying feeling and a taste of what's to come for us.  Stepping outside of our comfort zones, challenging ourselves to learn something new, and then seeing the fruits of those efforts come to life feels SO GOOD, and we're  looking forward to this aspect of the build...sailing on Delos, while it's full of plenty of challenges and curveballs of its own, has become second nature to us after all these years, and that's one of the things that excites us most about this...the learning that will take place, and the sheer challenge of it.  And of course, in this episode we make the decision that will completely alter the course of our lives in the most unexpected but incredible way!

Sending all our love and gratitude, and wishing you all a fantastic weekend!

Thanks Thomas!

Sailing SV Delos

We’re gonna do a livestream soon to answer some questions 🙌

Sailing SV Delos

The team started this week! Initially will be 3 months on Delos, 3 months on build. But we will just have to see how it goes and what feels right 👍⛵️

Sailing SV Delos

This is going to be rad! Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Congratulations!!

Stephanie Rollins

When do you think you are going to start your build? How much building, how much sailing?

SV Trippin'

This is going to be so cool. Cheers!!!!

SV Trippin'

I;m SUPER excited for yall and what an experience to see come to life! Thank You for all!

Thomas Lengel

Building Delos 2.0 in my home town couldn’t be any better. Keep doing what you do. Brilliant update. 👍🏻❤️✅

Wayne McClennan

Hey Guys. Just got caught up on the videos after arriving in Nuku Hiva. So amazing and exciting. My plan is to be in Brisbane by mid-Sept, take 2 months back to the US to visit family, then return. Your build really has me intrigued, and if you are looking for additional hands I'd like to offer some of my time and labor. Happy to go into more detail on my background in a private chat. Cheers.

Tim S

Woohoo 🙌 You and me both !

Sailing SV Delos

Right on Marnel, thanks so much for that!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Matt! Let’s nerd out 🤣

Sailing SV Delos

Congrats, and many thanks for sharing. Cannot wait to really start to nerd out on the details of the hull design and outfitting of the vessel! So inspiring!

Matt Urmy

Looking forward to following your exciting journey!! 😆 really enjoying the whole process so far and the details you guys have shared! Keep smilin' and having fun 🥳

Marnel Presto

What an exciting decision! Can't wait to see what the future brings!

David Hagler

Hi Brian, That sounds like the way to go. Veneer is available assembled into 4’ x 8 ‘ sheet with a backing layer. I haven’t used Nida core, but I looked at photos, and I am wondering how you glue to the edges of a honeycomb panel? They also make foam cored panels with thin grp skins that might be easier to work with, and possibly cheaper. I have always vacuum bagged my own panels, but over plywood. I would imagine that there are companies that could supply you with custom panels, plain for paint, veneered one side for walls, or both sides for doors. I’m sure Delos 2.0 will look awesome! That’s great that Kazza is learning to weld! I’m sure you could keep her busy. I built a 40’ Cross trimaran that I launched in 1990, and I loved sailing that boat! It a daunting project when you look at the plans, and imagine all that is involved! Boats were a lot simpler back then, and very little electrical equipment compared to now, I had a propane rv refrigerator, two 80 watt solar panels and one house battery and a starting battery, and never had to start my engine to charge the batteries.

Mark Gumprecht

Yes mate, absolutely. I have been designing the heating and cooling system from the ground up. With a fully insulated hull it should be a HUGE improvement in our level of comfort. Sending you our best and hope all is well! Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Marko, it wasn't an easy decision to make.... Both places have so much to offer. We will actually still be in Sweden for the end of the summer though so that will be amazing to spend some time on Gotland again. Sending our best and hope you are doing well! Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Ahoy Jeanne, Ahhh thanks so much for your kind words. We really appreciate that and also the support for this project. It will be a massive undertaking but we couldn't be more excited to begin this new chapter! Sending our best and lot's of hugs to you in Belgium. Brian, Karin, and Sierra

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Michael! We really are stoked! Yes the workshop cam is a cool idea. I'll get that sorted as soon as I arrive. Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yes it makes a hell of a sun shade!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Amanda, Thanks so much! We are super excited and in love with the area. Yes, if you happen to get word of anyplace rentable for us in the vicinity of Redlands or Thornlands please let us know! Fair winds and thanks for the support. Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Very cool Jon, welcome aboard and thank you so much for your support! Very exciting times indeed :). Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jeff, All of that was just learning and getting a vibe for the process. The frame I was welding is actually for hull #2. Our hull just finished design and the metal is being CNC cut as I write this message. So fabrication on ours, hull #3, will commence shortly and we'll be welding her together when we arrive in a few weeks! Fair winds and thanks for the support- Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Oh you are in for a treat my friend, we are going to nerd out on this together! Thinking a 48VDC system with approx 40KWH of Lithium. ~4KW solar in total. No AC generator, but a huge inverter probably 10KVA and two 25KW electric motors in parallel with an 80 HP Diesel for long range. More to come :) Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Mark, You are absolutely correct. Some custom built cats are a bit bland and "sterile". I think alot of that has to do with trying to keep the weight down. For example on the higher performance carbon or glass boats the interior walls are actually polished to be the finish. This is great for weight savings as you have no interior linings but not that great for a cozy and warm boat vibe... Since we're doing a fully insulated boat there will be the layer of insulation, then the outer wall. Which we can pretty much do what we want with in terms of materials and textures. We're also keen on building the interior with Nida-core and then covering with a veneer as you suggested. And then using bits of real wood as trim and accent to warm things up. Do you happen to have any experience working with Nida-core and veneers? If so any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated! Cheers- Brian

Sailing SV Delos

P.S. GET the AC installed. Heat Pumps can take you to hot and cold places ...... and are being made smaller and smaller. and energy efficient. Rick Moore tried one installed by himself ........ but you have the chance to cool your family in planned ahead style (even though the designer said you don't need ac ...... maybe before Global Warming). Do It! Do it for the girls! Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

Decision made, and now it is all engines go!!! I was kind of hoping that you would be coming to Sweden for the build, but will be closely following your epic adventure ahead. The design looks great.

Marko Makkonen

It was about time 🥳🥳🥳Dear Brian, dear Kazza, I am ashamed it took me so long to become a Patreon. Having followed you since years it is so right to do it now. At another turning point in yr lifes. Congrats to y decision. You are a great couple and human beings, thank you for being you. Warm regards to you and the little Nugget from Belgium Jeanne

Jeanne H. Mathieu

What an epic decision! I wish you all the best in this endeavor. Can‘t wait to follow you on the Workshop Webcam. Great Idea. :-)

Michael Wilke

This will be a fun awesome ride to share with you. At :44, I was today years old when I learned that when on the hard, you can use your cat as your garage.

Dan Moss

Wonderful! how incredibly exciting. Welcome to Australia...Stradbroke is a really nice place to spend some time. I'll let you know if I come up with accomodation for you all, if you still need it.

Amanda Dunstan

It is looking like I have chosen the proper time to become a patreon of Delos. I'm like Minnie Pearl, just glad to be here. Love you guys.

Jon Daily

Maybe I'm just a little slow (ok, probably...), but of all the video we've seen so far of you talking with builder, the designer, and of you and Karin welding, etc., has any of it actually been on Delos 2.0, or has it all been preparatory?

Jeff Fischer

Sounds good, they use a lot of closed cell foam up here in Canada as it provides good insulating properties, a vapor barrier and sound barrier all in one.

Bill Dapp

I'm very interested in the solar / electrical system.

Chris Marchi

This is supercool. Love the video. Helping to build the boat must be a great feeling.

Chris Marchi

So many practical things to design, but what are your thoughts on interior finish? Delos had maybe more wood than you would want on a boat like this, but some custom cats look more the inside of a refrigerator. Even just some wood trim can warm things up. I did custom yacht interiors for a living, and it is easy to put veneer on lightweight interior panels to save weight.

Mark Gumprecht

Hey thanks for that Simon, we really appreciate the support and need it now more than ever! Cheers to you and sending you our best.

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks David! Will do my best to make you proud :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Erik, Yeah man I gottcha! I think the interesting things about a build like this are talking about the larger systems integration issues. Why are we choosing to go with a hybrid drive? Why are we only having one diesel? Why did I choose this particular steering setup? So perhaps not so much us welding for entire videos, but talking about what we are fabricating and how it fits into the whole picture. I think timelapses are a really key part of this for sure to show change over time. But we will keep the fairing and sanding to a bare minimum! ha ha :) And yes, Brady boxing a kangaroo would be pure gold.

Sailing SV Delos

I've been watching your videos for 4 or 5 years now, but this project sounds so amazing I figured it was finally time to become a Patreon. I'm looking forward following this journey.

Simon

Awesome.. that sounds fast to me! Good luck! Looking forward to seeing the journey

Peter Hughes

Awesome stuff guys! So interesting. I think we would all love to see the whole process. No popcorn welds guys.lol You got this. Not a good welder but an accomplished electrician. Can't wait for that phase. Thanks for sharing.

david marentette

Hey Thanks you two! Appreciate your support. It's gonna be a hell of a project. It will certainly be a change for us, but change is good. New challenges, new things to learn, and by doing it ourselves with a team behind us we can do it our way with our compromises.....

Sailing SV Delos

Ha well, it will be a multi-year project for sure. We are targeting 6-8 months for the hull and deck and then will begin the outfitting and systems install after that.... No estimates on that as of yet.

Sailing SV Delos

Ahoy Mickey, Sounds like we need to do a Patrons Only Live Q&A :). We have some of the answers.... But not all of them :). Maybe I should set it up for next week?

Sailing SV Delos

Yes, many many BOAT units.... :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Bill, We're currently researching options for closed cell foam. There are a number of products that have great R Values and also noise dampening features. Usually it's mixed and sprayed in place from what I understand. The sides of the hull will be bar aluminum, however portions of the deck will be covered with a light-colored synthetic material to keep it cool and reflect light. Still working on the actual product but something like Flexi Teak or similar I think would work well.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jay, thanks for your kind and encouraging words. I know what you mean. It's gonna be a journey for sure but it feels good to have a solid team behind us!

Sailing SV Delos

We only have the hull and deck production schedule at this point.... With a team of 3 full time fabricators + Kazza and I helping as we can a we should be done with the hull in 6-8 months then start the outfitting. That's the plan anyway!

Sailing SV Delos

You asked what we'd like to see. Fairing... we really don't need to see fairing. If I want to see more fairing I'll watch Matt & Jessica and/or Ran Sailing. Please no fairing! I love the idea of a shopcam, though. Some fun time-lapse would be cool. So excited for you guys, you've been talking delos 2.0 for years! Time to do a little happy dance! You know what else would be fun to see? If Brady comes to visit, get him to box with a kangaroo! Not hating on Brady or anything, I think it'd just be so much fun, and he'd probably enjoy it, too.

Erik Adler

Amazing project! Roughly how long will the build take?

Peter Hughes

What an amazing adventure. As someone who builds his own boat and been going at it for four years now I have to say that it’s really rewarding. It’s hard but you know that. The feeling you get when you Finnish something is amazing. It will be awesome to follow this journey.

Jay Södermark

I'd love to follow how you plan on insulating the boat and planning for more northern cruising. Maine was fascinating to me. Also, will you keep it fully aluminum or coat the outside to protect the hull from the elements? Very excited to follow you and Kazza in your new adventures with Delos 2.0.

Bill Dapp

BOAT = Bring Out Another Thousand How about BOATHT? Bring Out Another Three Hundred Thousand! Yikes! Holly Molly 8 - O It's time for a new Delos to be born. And just wait until you start feeling the LABOR pains - not for hours - but for many many months. Boy-O-Boy

Scott C. Wise

Holy Shit !!!!! WOW Im so excited for you guys. So many questions, like where will you live while building, when will you sell Delos, what time frame are you looking at, etc. Love the idea of the Patron CAM. Maybe you could also ask past crew members to come down and join in the construction task. Anyway, thanks for starting my St Patricks weekend in Annapolis with such great news. God Bless..., and see you on the next tack !

Mickey Finn

Yikes!!! How long will this take? Kudos for your courage.

Julia

All i can say is "Woo Hoo".

John West

Big, big respect for your thought process and decision. She looks like the perfect boat for you guys. Very excited for you! Peace and fair winds! Liz and Jamie 🙏
