Patron's Only Delos 2.0 Build Weekly Timelapse!

Hey Delos Tribe, we've got something pretty cool for ya! We're going to start posting weekly timelapses from the workshop, and here is our first one! This week we started placing some hull plates we wheeled a few days ago. We also finished welding in the skeg plate on the starboard side, which looks like a shark fin, on the stern.  At this point the boat is still upside down so the starboard side is on the right in the video.... The skeg plate will be a strong point the rudder hangs from.  We also cut a slot in the skeg plate and welded in the stern tube which eventually will house the cutlass bearing that supports the propellor shaft. Let us know what you think about these, should it be faster? Slower? Any other feedback we can work on? We hope you're all having a wonderful week, and we will see you in a couple days with another brand new episode!

Big hugs from the whole fam 💕

Is there a video where you put it together from scratch?

Igor Razumny

Are you not concerned about the salt water getting into the inside structure and corroding the welds and aluminum joints

R. D. Lee

Great to see the progress.

BanJ

thank you for replying yay.. looking foward to future vids. yay... much love.

Ana Pacha

So cool to see this. Safe sails ✨️

finn b hansen

Awesome! The inner hull plates placed at the beginning of the time lapse: are they flat or will they also be wheeled?

Andrew Hlavacek

Just watched at .25x speed to enjoy it longer and catch more detail. Very cool.

Dan Moss

Very cool to see this process.

Tim Heslip

Pace is great - and these weekly will be really fun to watch the progress. I too am interested in the "art" associated with tacking in parts before filling in with weld to manage heat and warping. Might be a topic for a future video? Thank you for sharing!!!

SV Second Half

Great suggestion, William. I found it better at 25% playback speed as well, but others can adjust to their liking. If the FPS could be doubled that would make it a little smoother but this FPS is viewable.

Scott Latch

Keep in mind the time it takes to edit. We have the choice to scrub through slow down or speed up. Brian and Karen have so much work to do. We don’t want to add to their load now do we. Best wishes to our friends down under keep up the real work and thanks.

Mike TopCat

Awesome!

Austin Knobloch

Terrific, great progress 👍

John Hardie

Great idea. Aspecially when everybody had left. Great you kept that. However, I agree with the abovementioned comments on the speed. It makes it look more of speedy Gonzales…difficult to follow. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Jeanne H. Mathieu

No not yet….. Still so much to do 😉💪

Sailing SV Delos

100 % of the pieces are CNC cut, unless there has been a design mistake where it’s left out of the cut files. Then we cut bu hand.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Terry awesome questions! Initially all the plates are tack welded, adjusted, fit, tack welded a bit more, etc. This keeps everything straight and doesnt put too much heat into the plate until it’s all tacked around the frames. Then the process repeats at all the seams of the plates themselves. After all this its welded in longer joining welds, alternating space to avoid putting in too much heat in one place. Eventually all the welds join into one continuous weld and the overlaps are ground down so you’d never know it was originally two pieces of plate!

Sailing SV Delos

Yes definitely saving us heaps! if I get paid double my current wages anything times 0 is still 0 🤣

Sailing SV Delos

Those are the escape hatch frames for the under wing.

Sailing SV Delos

Probably a MIG welder will be involved!

Sailing SV Delos

The cutlass bearing actually sits inside a GRP tube thats secured with chockfast so it can be aligned and replaced down the line. So the whole thing slides into the tube we welded in…..That will be a cool video 👍

Sailing SV Delos

Looks great, but a bit too fast!! Maybe the 2:18 time could be stretched to maybe 6:00 or so. And I agree, a little voice over would be really helpful so we have an idea of what's going on!! I agree with Denis Patrick about the cutlass bearing housing. Might save some headaches down the road!

Charles Burns

I agree with the rest... at least a little slower. Perhaps slow to actual video speed for certain crucial/meaningful spots. I just watched it again at 25% playback speed. That was satisfying. I caught a lot of details I was missing out on.

William Flower

My husband and I love watching your videos:)

Sue von Helms & Harry Harper

Well, I actually think I'd like it faster! But since I seem to be alone in that, perhaps this speed would be good (or even slower) if there were a voice-over narration of what's going on. I'm only a YouTube sailor, and my knowledge of boat design and construction is next to nil. No, it's actually nil. :-)

Jeff Fischer

Awesome feedback Tom! Thank you :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Ana! Thanks for all the cool ideas and feedback! Will make it longer next week for sure! and yes we have done a little introduction to the build crew and some Nuggs updates on how daycare is going too. HUGS!

Sailing SV Delos

thanks Bill! will do for next week!

Sailing SV Delos

thanks for feedback Bonne! next week :)

Sailing SV Delos

Awesome feedback Dale! Will slow it down for next week :)

Two questions.. are the plates weld to the frame in long continues beads, and on every structural member, or just tacked in numerous places. 2nd question... of the 1 million pieces (my est.) laser cut based on the blueprints to build the ship, what percentage of all the aluminum is that? Are 100% of the pieces laser cut as per the plan, or are there some "strange ones" that are hand-cut as the ship is assembled?

Terry Haan

Slower - although after watching I found I could grab the progress bar and move to explore - for instance there appeared an opening suddenly in the plate I missed. When I drug the handle over I could see it being cut out. In any case it's great - I look forward to all you share. Great progress. How about some music or narration to go along with the time lapse?

Tom Worrell

Slower... Much slower...

Jean Friedberg

Love the Timelapse! Are you sure that you want to weld in the cutlass bearing housing? Wouldn’t it be easier to service if the housing was bolted on?

Denis Patrick

Slower please. I can’t really tell what you’re doing. Great idea however!

Dale Robbins

Slower please.

Janet Dupree

loved it.. but yes a little bit slower and maybe longer. omg looks insane. can you imagine when the whole boat is done and all the time lapses put together to see the whole build from start to finish.. future vid idea btw. loving the work guys... also like someone else said in the comments here, would be cool for a future vid idea aswell, maybe do a interview with the built crew etc... also post some updates on baby nuggs(sierra) day care and how she is adapting to aussie and land semi permanet life.. basically maybe do a live session Q and A live from aussie.

Ana Pacha

Agreed with the other comments, a bit slower would work better. So what if the time lapse is 5 minutes instead of 2. Love it though! Thanks!

Bill Dapp

Yah slower would like be helpful. Really love the videos though

Brian D. Campbell

I would like it slower ....... and that would make it longer. It was hard for this oldster to follow the action. That Main Deck is a beast! Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

I really like the time lapse but believe it would be better to slow the time lapse down a bit. It’s hard to watch everything that quickly. Also think a camera at the other end would be great to see what’s happening easier and closer to your work. The progress is incredible and am so excited for you!!!!!

Steve Allen

So rivets and welds to hold together? What will your repair kit have to look like?

David Hale

What are the square boxes at the middle of each side approximately amidships?

Stephen P Griswold

Video speed is fine. My question... I know WHY you're helping with the manpower of the build, because you're Brian Trautman and that's just part of what you do, EVERYTHING! But I'm interested to know if your time spent there is saving you $$$ on the final bill.

Jeff Allen

slow down the timelapse some.

David Gray

So cool!! This also made me think about who the first person in the shop is every morning. I would love to learn more about the team members you’re working with. Maybe they can do a Patreon Channel TakeOver (like people used to do on Instagram pre-pandemic [do people still do that])?

Sadie Johnson

I think a little slower would be better.

George Telschow

That is so cool! Especially knowing how difficult using the English Wheel is for making the curved hull plating. I am really looking forward to the future time lapses. You are farther along that I thought...which is GREAT!!

Chip Andrews

Very cool, the people hours going into the build is crazy, I have a really good feeling she is going to turn out to be a masterpiece

Alan Gore

OUT FRICK'N STANDING ❤️ IT

Kelly-Laura Green

Timelapse is good, looking forward to seeing weekly build.

Frank

very cool!!! So much fun to see her coming to life!!!

Heidi McKechnie

Love this view into the progress.

steve morrison

She's coming along!

Rick Doner

Looking good!

James Hann

Love it!!! Thanks for posting

George Deehan

Do you have an estimate on when you'll sea trial?

David Walsh

Cool!
