You're totally valid with that take. Billy was a monster, and while I personally believe he redeemed himself in death, he also did and said terrible things in life. We understand why he was like that while seeing the sweet kid he used to be, and know that his dad is the ultimate villain. That doesn't excuse his actions, but the sympathetic origins make him stand out.

Billy was a monster and only redeemed himself after being possessed by another monster. I can't feel sorry for him. Sure, he was abused himself, but likely so was his dad, but we don't forgive him, do we? Abuse is a cycle, and the true heroes are the ones who break it (like Max), not the ones who perpetuate it and then suddenly feel bad.
