Philadelphia: First Time Reaction

Comments

I must have missed this notification! I saw the YouTube notification today and came here to check it out. I'm so happy you got to experience this film. Did you know that the film is loosely based on real events in the lives of two Philadelphia lawyers who sued their respective law firms for wrongful dismissal based on AIDS discrimination? There's a Washington Post article that came out on the heels of the release of this film that describes the story of one of the real lawyers: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1994/01/25/the-ghost-of-philadelphia/fbaf12f4-0580-4e97-bc04-4af2ccbcda10/ I would have liked to see more scenes of Andy and Miguel together as a couple, at least one scene that showed them living together, for example. I was not at all happy when I found out that some scenes showing more affection between Andy and Miguel were cut, including one with them in bed together. My guess is that they felt that in order for the film to have a larger educational impact on people, it would be wise to avoid turning off mildly homophobic audience who still came to see the film due to the star cast. Here's one of these cut scenes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKMS91y7Udg Miller's transformation from an unabashed homophobe to being unwillingly tolerant to finally starting to become an ally by the end of the film was brilliantly portrayed by Denzel. It's a shame he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. As Jen instantly recognized, the opening song is by Bruce Springsteen ("Streets of Philadelphia") and he won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Neil Young's song at the end of the film ("Philadelphia") was also nominated, but he lost to Springsteen. Also, as Nick recalled, Tom Hanks won an Oscar for Best Actor. The director, Jonathan Demme had previously won an Oscar for Best Director for "The Silence of the Lambs". And there's more than just two actors that are common between these two films. See here for the entire list of cast and crew that have been credited under both films: https://www.imdb.com/search/name/?roles=tt0107818,tt0102926 Also, Miller's daughter's name in this film is Clarice :)
