Singin' in the Rain is my absolute favorite movie musical. Jean Hagen (Lina Lamont) put on the comedy voice and used her normal voice where you could tell it wasn't Debbie Reynolds doing the supposed talking voice-over while Betty Noyes did the singing voice-over for Jean and some of Debbie's singing. Gene Kelly was unhappy with Debbie Reynolds' lack of dancing experience. Debbie Reynolds was only 19 and had a gymnast background. Gene worked her very hard to get the dancing right and her feet were bleeding after shooting the "Good Morning" scene. The other great male film dancer of the times, Fred Astaire, volunteered to help Debbie with her dancing after finding her crying under a piano at one point during the production. The conversion of studios and theaters from silent to all-talking films took place over 3-4 years instead of the few weeks the movie seemed to show.
