That's an excellent point! My opinion of the movie has grown since we watched it, and I find it interesting they left the ending ambiguous. Certainly open to interpretation.

It was also neat to hear you mention about remembering the poem because from what I hear it's actually more of a loose adaptation of the original so actually knowing the original well might not have gotten you everything. I actually interpret the ending as The Green Knight not killing him. It's left a bit ambiguous but I think it was at least in part as a metaphor of facing death in this movie. Only when he removed the belt did he actually pass the test and become "ready" and so the Green Knight sends him back to tell the tale and provide a lesson. A lot of little things like that in this movie to get from it like you mentioned based on interpretation, it's a fun trip looking into metaphor and allegory about honor, knighthood, death, and so on.
