Intro to Threadbare /// Pt. 2 : Shapes Beyond the Surface

This series will be largely focused on figures composed with rough cuts of fabric. However, it won’t be strictly limited to that. You’ll see figures posed among all sorts of elements.

My broader aim is to create compositions full of dramatic shapes and lively gestures. Rough cuts of fabric are essential because they’re so malleable—able to take on any shape imaginable. I’m especially fascinated by how flowing fabric can extend the gestures and forms of the subject, allowing for all sorts of theatrical draping and concealment of the figure.

Still, there is more to it than that…

Threadbare is a retreat into a realm of timeless aesthetic appeal. It’s about exploring a subject that, on some primal level, might resonate with people from any era.

That’s why the figures must remain unadorned by complex fashion. Clothing—whether contemporary or historical—immediately anchors the subject to a particular time and place. Rough cuts of fabric, cords, and straps, by contrast, are ageless.

As with classical sculpture, the subjects are depicted nude—an intrinsic state of being. The human form is at once the figure of a conscious being, and a kind of raw material—like clay or stone—ready to be shaped and composed to express something beyond itself.
