Deviation : Unicorn Rider

I'm a fantasy artist at heart. I would consider most of my figure drawings to be in a realm of fantasy as well. This one is a bit more overt. It began as a simple horse study that I decided to push further. I found good reference for the unicorn pose. The rider is invented.

While I'm not as familiar with animal anatomy (there's so much still to learn!), I do find that my experience with the human figure can be applied to any creature. Ultimately, it's all a matter of shapes, forms, and edges.

Attached is a high-res version.

Thanks Kovan! I'll make sure to keep posting this sort of thing alongside my current project. I find the allure of fantasy is that it can evoke worlds which are unexplored — where there's still a great sense of mystery. There must also be a sense of grounded realism, in order for it feel believable and meaningful. I'm constantly trying find that balance in my work.

Hello Lane ! This drawing is stunning ! I wish you'd share more drawings like this one (or make more of them). On Instagram or X, there are a few similar ones, like the inked piece with the girl and the mouse, for example, but I imagine figure drawings and the drapery studies you integrate into them already take a lot of time, and I totally understand that ! Either way, it's really inspiring. Fantasy drawings are often the ones that move us the most, especially if we grew up reading books or watching movies about imaginary creatures and magical worlds. Thanks so much for sharing !
