Dave DuFour Post show (2022 NBA preview)

Dave asks me who my favorite players were, and naturally that leads to baseball batting stances and Jaren Jackson's 3-point rate.

I'm referring to KD being “crowned” from that series (much in the same way Kawhi was in '19). He's fulfilling the Jordanian archetype of “best scorer you can trust to get buckets" and a hypothetically dominant or “complete” 2-way player. Thing is, I don’t see him as a really strong defender. I thought KD struggled with turnovers/decisions at times against pressure in that series, which isn’t new for him. He actually has a quote somewhere about not wanting to be doubled as the reason for going to Golden State. What’s impressive to me is the shotmaking and his continued general excellence post Achilles, along with playing 2 full games! In my metrics, that series still ranked 11th in his career in BPM and 18th in AuPM. Brooklyn’s ORTG in the series with him on was 106. The Nets were -11 per 100 with Durant on the floor in the final 5 games of the series when he doing his heavy lifting. His overall scoring stats were 31/+3% — 32/+1%% over the last 5 games — plenty excellent, especially when you consider minutes, but there have been 77 series over 30 per 75 in the last 20 years and: -Durant’s ranked 62nd in efficiency. -His team’s offense was 73rd among those 77. -His on/off was 77th out of 77. Especially when considering context, that makes for a plenty good series (and one consistent with his prior profile). That’s why I think he has an argument for #1.But relative to the sentiment that KD is “clearly the best player in the league” and that he had some kind of borderline All-Time series, I think it’s overrated.

In the first part of the original pod, you mention KD's performance being overrated in the 2020 playoffs. Can you elaborate on why you are lower on it than most?
