Submit questions for VP of NBA Analytics & Strategy

Hey everyone -- This Friday I'm interview Evan Wasch, who is the VP of Analytics and Strategy for the NBA. This will take place at the IDEA analytics conference in the 12:45 Eastern / 9:45 pacific time slot.

If you have any questions that are related to how the league uses data for strategy, submit them below and hopefully I'll be able to get to them.

Are you seeing any evidence that coaches are changing their defensive rules based on probabilistic models of what offenses should do in a given situation, e.g. http://projects.yisongyue.com/bballpredict/ (full disclosure, Yisong is an old friend), or are they relying solely on traditional video analysis to decide how they want to defend a particular offense?

We've seen this huge shift in the last 20+ years from a slow game (bottoming out in the late 90s, crowded lanes, and physical defense to this super wide spaced out perimeter focused game. So now, with the analytics being at the level they're at, I think a really good question would be to ask him would be about the development with analytics in determining where the NBA goes from here. Analytics have already proven that the 3 point shot is valuable, and now we have guys literally shooting shots from the logo like that's normal. Are we at the peak of the 3 ball era, and this extreme spacing and pace or do they still see us on the pathway to even more extreme version of that?

I’d like to know whether the league works in conjunction with the NBAPA on any analytics initiatives designed to improve and promote their use and understanding of the leagues financial growth initiatives or any other programs designed to increase the accessibility of business analytics as a tool for collective betterment rather than a bitter pill to swallow.

Can the 'hockey assist', the pass that leads to an assist, become a readily available statistic? And can charges called as offensive fouls be tracked per player (both on offense and defense)? How has the role of analytics changed in the NBA since Bronze Medal performance in the 2004 Olympics?

What efforts are being made to make advanced analytics more approachable and widely accepted?

Star Fyre

What elements of analytics would you like to see become as common as the typical per game stats like points, rebounds, and assists?

How hard is it to get coaches and players to buy into data?

Maltrab

Does the data show what's more efficient on average to double the post, or let it play out 1 on 1? Is there data on spacing?

Can you convince Ben to give us AI and Prime DRose CORP? In all seriousness, what is the most important metric to you when evaluating a player? And do you believe the hesitation to adopt analytical analysis among the NBA fanbase will change over time as we find new ways to better understand the game?

With all the data available nowadays, will the league consider changes to the box score (for example, including deflections, charges drawn) to help fans understand the game in a more holistic manner?

How could the nba use the draft to reward teams for investing in player development and player health? Basically I don’t want to see Cade Cunningham get wasted on the pistons for a couple years how could create a system that got good young prospects on teams that are a player away from turning the corner rather than doom them to incompetence

When coaches say play the right the way what does that mean to you?
