Patreon pod: The RealGM Top 100 players list

Every few years the realGM Player Comparison board produces a list of the 100 greatest players in NBA history. They just finished the latest version (unofficially the 7th version of the list), so Doctor MJ (Matt Johnson) and I discuss the history and trends of the list, as well as reactions to the latest versions.

Here's the history of the list we reference: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HWQLTqFcJdJJNvMFDAwikJXujuh75uajUPrE0eF2XXc/edit#gid=0

Didn't know you are here as well Doc :D ~70sFan

Yeah. One of the things I noticed, we usually shape our criteria around the very very best. I'd like think that I have a pretty consistent top 40 or so. But as we got to the lower end of the top 100, there's a lack of actually dominant primes as a centrepiece and the criteria set in place starts to fail because weightings within categories get thrown out too much. With that it's exactly like you said, we have triple of the remaining spots as options.

Hey Cagan! Glad you enjoyed. Love that we can disagree and still keep going!

Hello Thinkers of Basketball! I want to thank Ben for having me on. It was incredibly fun being able to go meta talking about our Top 100 projects from all these years. If anyone has any questions or takes that would be fruitful for discussion, I'd love to talk further y'all. Cheers!

Yeah I think those last 30 or 40 spots always have dwindling voters. Also, there are probably 75 players with cases for the last 25 or 30 spots.

First, thank you and I want to say I really enjoyed the podcast. I always have my major disagreements with Doctor MJ yet he's probably my favourite RealGM user to have a discussion with. And really glad to see him talking with you Ben. Cheers. --- I participated for more than 80 spots I think. And I have to say that the list is pretty inconsistent after top 70 or so due to drop in participation and also fatigue. We were like 8-12 people tired with thinking about the same things after 2 or 3 days. One of that situation was it did not open up to have more names in mind. The discussion was not diverse enough to indulge other players after such fatigue among so little number of people. Mark Price, Shawn Kemp were in my mind and I couldn't get myself to write proper essays how they should be under consideration. I don't know, I had them low but I felt like there were good cases to be made for Lowry, Mullin, Butler. I'm sure half of other people were in the same boat as me since most of the late votes were copy/paste jobs since the votes were scattered around. --- Another thing I'd like to mention is that having entirely different voter pool is probably the biggest factor to the changes. The podcast ends with Curry/Durant and I absolutely agree that Curry added way more value to his career. But there was no consideration for the results of the previous project. We definitely did not think of it as "OK, Durant was 28th in the last one, where are we having him this time around after the 3 seasons he had". I'd assume that the situation between Durant and Curry in the project, if these voters were the ones in the project in 2017, they'd have Durant higher than 28, Curry lower than 29 and Curry would've gained more than Durant in 2020. We would've loved to have you in the project. Especially in that tier with not just with Durant, Curry and Paul but also with Wade and Nash. Barkley was only 1 spot ahead of Durant. Harden was so close to them. There was also Stockton who was too high my for taste with the lack of a proper top end to be in that tier. There was a massive discussion between peak, prime duration and durability. --- Again, thank you!
