It makes it extra hard that Doug is an English speaker learning Japanese, there’s a really big separation between those languages. Other languages (the Romance languages specifically) that share an alphabet and sorta overlap words with English are a lot easier to learn. 4 years of Spanish in school was all it took for me to be comfortable in full coherent conversations, but the similarities to English made the friction of learning so much lower. For example in Spanish, “water” is “agua”. Not only is it easy to remember that it’s basically the same root ‘aqua’ I already know in English, but I can intuitively spell and read it with my familiar alphabet. A whole new alphabet with less root sharing like Japanese is a much taller order

In regards to the language difficulty I think the method of learning really effects the uptake of the language. I started learning Chinese about 10 years ago when I moved there for a bit. and i learned a good amount the first 10 months through sheer brute force, maybe to a late beginner level but my listening was terrible. Plus once I left china I stayed at the same level for years dispite my effort. In the last 3 mobths or so however, I started using a more comprehensible input kind of approach, mostly reading/listening really short stories often multiple time over a few days and it's worked wonders. I can feel the improvement in my brain it's wild. I feel like another year of this method and I'll be able to handle myself in China no problem.

Appollochan

Omg, I actually understand Aiden’s Chinese. It’s not that bad! 我们是朋友😂😂

I loved Big A's point about how traveling just makes you be like "why can't this be at home." I think about that a lot living in Los Angeles now after living all over the world. Much like him I love the great food of literally any cuisine BUT I hate that this city is so fragmented that it is a pain to get around. Our subway/train in the metro definitely leaves things to be desired but I would argue the greatest weakness of it is that it just doesn't go everywhere. If you have a location along the line, then a lot of the day you will actually get to locations faster than driving. LA could have been so great but instead they decided to use zoning for discrimination.

This episode felt like one of the conversations you and the boys would have before saying "We should start a podcast!" Very possibly my favorite episode though with how down-to-earth and genuine it felt.
