2025-12-07 17:32:48 +0000 UTCOn the topic of social media monetization, I think Aiden brought up something interesting with the "monetized 4chan posts" argument. 4chan became what it did because platforms moderated this kind of extreme speech out of their sites, meaning that the only place left for these people to go was into an unmoderated space. But as we see with citizens united, "free" speech can't have a monetary incentive attached to it and still be FREE. That's why the mostly unmoderated site of Archive of Our Own (AO3, internet hub for fanfic) doesn't host ads or give creators money. It simply exists as a way to store free, uncensored speech. Truly free speech can't be moderated, but it also can't be monetized either.
