The generals in WWI get ahit on far too much for being dumb, but in reality they were trying all sorts of stuff. Tear gas in 1914, gas, box barrages, trench raiding, and airplanes in 1915, tanks and flamethrowers in 1916, man-portable automatic weapons in 1917....they were innovating as best as they could, and they get slammed for not.
