Weekly report 63

Hi everybody.

Last week Chestnut and I had a lot of conversations about our design decisions for 0.5 and what we could have done differently. Since they may impact the future releases of the game, we want to share them with you.

Main Story updates

The last time we did the Main Story, we dedicated 2.5 updates to it (0.1, 0.2, and a bit of 0.3). Breaking the continuous story into chunks allowed us to have a shorter release timeline, but it reduced the sense of completion since the first part of Serena's quest (giving the message to Madeline and getting its reward) couldn't be achieved until 0.3.

After doing Myrtle's content for 0.4, we really liked how it had a satisfactory end and tried to create something similar for 0.5.

Now, although 0.5 finishes with a cliff-hanger that leads to the next part of the Main Story, I think we have managed to 'end' a chapter satisfactorily.

The cost, of course, has been that it's taking us longer to develop it than we had anticipated or planned, and this has led to several problems:

With the first two, we can't do much as we're already working as much as we can, and hopefully, the quality is good enough that you'll like it after the release. But we just want to let you all know and confirm that we don't plan for the future updates to take this long, and we'll release 0.5 as soon as it's ready.

We had planned to tell our side-stories using two quests (unless we see it doesn't work and we need three, of course), but we didn't have a similar plan for Main Stories. After working on 0.5, we're considering whether breaking up the future Main Story updates into two chunks will be a better design decision. It's something we're still thinking about, and we'll have to wait and see the response to 0.5, but we're conscious of alternative approaches.

Anyhow, do leave us a comment and let us know your thoughts about it.

Weekly report:

We have started a new way of editing/completing the content in that we begin from the beginning and finish everything until certain points in the story. One of those points was Simmone's content, and although it was almost done last week, on a second visit, there were many small, but I think important changes that we had to make to finish it, and that took much of our time last week (especially mine). We have begun work on the second chunk of edits and completion, and Chestnut has been working on the second sex scene (its presex). I won't need to rewrite anything new, but one of the scenes needs to be posed differently since we had created new facial expressions we didn't have earlier.

Next week's plan:

By the end of the next week, we want to have finished the second sex scene and have everything ready leading up to it. Then we'll start testing and fixing the third chunk of edits, including the third sex scene.

That's all we have.

Have a great weekend
Cheers

This communication is just perfect. I missed that by some other projects where you have no idea what’s going on for weeks or even months.

For my part I'm perfectly happy for it to take ages. My life goes on and I don't think really think about WaL until I get one of your emails, and then it's nice to see a good looking piece of art. One day, who knows when, I'll discover that there's new stuff to play and I'll get excited again. I'm not constantly judging if your work is worth my monthly contribution. I've already decided that it is.

You guys are very professional. You might the best in this business. You keep everyone updated which is what people want. The art and quality is great as well. I don’t expect perfection - but I know it’s good either way. This is the best game I’ve played on patreon by far. Good art, story and content overall.

I have followed and supported games in the past that finished the main story first, and then added several updates to add in and wrap up side quests. This caused me to lose interest in those game's development. Emotionally, I was already done. I'd rather you intersperse the side quests, and not REALLY finish the main story until you are ready to be done with the whole thing.

Thanks for the update and no worries guys!! In light of your professionalism, attention to detail, keeping us in the loop, I am MORE than happy to be supporting, even if updates take months. That said, if you feel you will be happier breaking up updates into smaller releases, I say go for it, if only to see how it feels to you and your process. Keep up the great work!!! :-)

Andrew

Please don't get stressed. We're Grown up supporters we can wait when we need to. Your own judgement on what is a sensible chunk of art and code for the two of you to keep in the air at one time is probably more significant

Do whatever results in less stress for you! :)

Love your work guys. I am sad to hear that you feel stressed about the time between the releases. Making good quality games takes time and as long as you keep your Patreons updated about the progress, like you do, there is no problem. Releasing shorter updates, as been suggested, is one way to shorten down release time, but personally I prefer longer and more cohesive updates. Take care!

Keep up the good work! I think I may have a solution for you guys. If you look at the game, Summertime Saga, over the years as quality started to improve, time between release dates started slipping. So to compensate, Dark cookie started making half updates in between major releases. A 0.X release with story and depth, and then two or so months later a 0.X5 update with a short side quest and maybe two or so animations. If you guys broke out one or two side-quests (the fairy in the woods, for example) as a separate update, you could give us 2 solid updates a year or so that you could work on for 6 months at a stretch, but still have something out there every few months so you don't feel antsy about release timelines. Just a thought. I'm happy enough to wait. You guys are doing an awesome job.

Michael
