Weekly report 167

Hi, everybody.

I hope you've had a good week despite the scorchingly hot weather, especially if you live in the northern hemisphere.

Our report this week will be brief, mainly because we did more of what we had done last week: Chestnut worked only on cutscenes, and I wrote, edited, and posed scenes from Gomira's second quest (I'm still in the beginning parts of it).

For the rest of this report, I want to address an issue that I think should not be ignored: our development time for the 0.7 content.

We released our previous update on the 31st of July of last year, so it's almost a year since an update, and I completely understand that many of you who have supported us simply because you like our game and want to see us succeed are unhappy with our rate of output. It's frustrating to know that we're not doing as well as you think we should. We owe you, our patrons, everything when it comes to being able to work on the game full-time and take care of our family, and I don't want to fail you.

There's a lot that I'd like to do but can't, but the least I can do is explain why it has taken us this long to develop 0.7, and what we're doing to shorten it. Whether our reasons are valid or not,  I'll leave to your judgment:

Shortly after the release of 0.6, when we had taken a short break, had done the planning phase of 0.7, and had started with the writing and the earlier tasks, we had our second baby. Our newborn was completely different from our first child and required a lot more attention from us, and that was the first circumstance that noticeably impacted the number of hours we could dedicate to work at that time.

The second circumstance happened in January when I had two back-to-back surgeries that crippled me for a while, leaving most of the work on Chestnut's shoulders.

In both of these instances, we discussed and considered pausing Patreon for a month or two but decided that that would essentially halt the project because, despite having a baby and the surgeries, we were trying to put as many hours a day as we could into development. The hours were admittedly less than before, but they moved the project forward.

It has been a few months now that we have gotten back into our old routine, not as well as before we had our baby (I used to clock 8-10 hours a day, seven days a week, now I do 7-8 hours, still seven days a week), but the impact of those months is there. Add to that the fact that Gomira's update has more words than any of our previous releases, translating into more content that needs to be posed, edited, tested, and, of course, created art for.

To move things faster, we have been working seven days a week and stopped taking breaks (except when necessary for the baby). People ask me for release dates, and I'm sorry because although we have internal deadlines that we try to reach, I cannot share them. All I can say is that we're trying very hard to have this release ready as soon as we can.

I'm sorry if this post became too long, and feel free to use the comments section to let us know your thoughts.

Have a great weekend.
Cheers

Hey y'all are killing it and very communicative keep up the good work! However make sure you guys take time for yourselves as well you can't get those memories with the new kiddo back once they pass so enjoy it! Also for the love of God once this update is out go on a vacation!!

matthew garrison

No stress, considering what you guys are creating I fully expect this to take a significant amount of time and effort. I am here for the long haul so spend time with the family! Take some vacation, don't work weekends, there is no hurry ;9

evengill

You are still one ofnthe most communicative developers out there....both about your game and giving us rather personal insights into your family. My second child was...more demanding that the first two. Believe me I get it. Keep moving forward l, but I dont like the idea of not taking breaks. If you lose the will for the game then there is no game

Illicit_Licid

I've never been unhappy with your rate of output, and I have a harder time than you do understanding anybody who is. As a project becomes bigger, adding 'the same sized' expansion takes longer because there are more things that it affects and is affected by. You're doing fine. Don't stress over people who may be more difficult to please than you imagine.

Quality over quantity. Take your time

ivanhunter- johnson

Don't stress yourself. Quality is more important than scedules, and so is free tiime and family time. Keep up the good work!

Oliver Volland

Its a marathon, not a sprint. I personally prefer you taking your time, because when you have more energy/better health/mental health, the results will be much better! I would assume that most people that drop in and just ask for release date and complain about next version not being out yet, dont understand how much effort it takes to deliver a quality product (that they are accustomed to). I mean, sure, you could potentially just push out something thats "technically complete" but people would be disappointed and might stop supporting the project (because i feel that most people that are actually supporting, are supporting it for the long run. For exactly that quality you have provided up until this point. trusting that what comes in the future will have the same qualiy or if they support it, maybe even better) Keep it up! Thanks for sharing! P.S.: Your openness and professionalism made me wanna support you more. So i upped my pledge. Keep it up!

Do not apologize for living... You give us a sum up of what happened every week, and I'm pretty sure all of us are happy with that. Life happens, don't be sorry, it's all natural. Do not feel bad, you're doing the best you can to keep your end of the bargain, and you do it amazingly well. Bad things happen, happened and will happen, don't feel guilty. Once again, it's how life is. I'm gald you share all these news with us, but I personally don't mind if you guys took some time off for you family. Life is important, more important than work if you ask me. I know you guys are really serious about it, and you want to do everything not to let us feel "used" or "tricked", but I assure you I understand what your work is, and shit happens sometimes. Don't stress yourselves over it, work at your pace, you're working harder than a lot of devs out there, and I hope it's not tainting your family life and your personal life as well. Be safe, take the time you need. Much love.

Rwede

Please take care of yourself. As a family father myself I know how difficult it can be to get all the pieces together. We support you because we love your game. So remember to take a holiday and rest. ♥️

Rossan 78

What everyone saide. Take your time.

Ragvosh Bear-Clan

Life is a balance between work and family/personal time. When you sacrifice the second to accomplish the first you will develop burn out and nobody wants that. Take your time, keep us informed and don't go silent. Keep a steady but manageable pace. We support you because of what you have created, and we wish to see it through. None of the creators I support approaches things the same, and I for one appreciate the effort that you take to keep us informed along the way and produce a top notch product. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the excellent results it will produce.

Michael Vaccaro

Please don’t push yourselves because of us. I’ll gladly wait for the update knowing you’re pacing yourselves properly

James Bodine

I'd like to chime in. You guys STILL produce the most content of all the ~10 content creators I support, and I read every single weekly report, looking forward to the content. You guys obviously spend a lot of time, and the game you've produced up until now has been nothing less of fantastic. Make sure to take care of yourselves, and your family, and we'll be ready and excited for the content as soon as it's available. Don't stress, and be safe! Happy to hear you guys had a second child! :)

dimhoLt

As much as we are all anxious for the next update, take your time to do it right and at the pace healthy for you. I for one, understand and can be patient.

James Hammond

It's perfectly normal for you guys to have paid parental leave, medical leave and the regular 5 weeks vacation. You shouldn't feel guilty for life happening. We can wait.

Micheal Heaviside

My friend, take your time. I am very patient and so long as I am kept up to date, I don’t mind waiting another year if necessary

Erik Miller

Please do not work yourselves to the bone it’s not worth an update if you have to work under these conditions. I’m sure every patron would be fine waiting longer for you both to take better care of yourselves.

ryan

I was wondering what happened. Thanks for the update, When you are doing the best you can it's the best you can do. Don't worry, most of us have all had babies and injuries. It happens to almost all of us.

Riidher66776

Thanks for entertaining us! Stay safe and take care.

John Adcox

You have my FULL support. Of course I want you to release something. But I also want something released that hasn't been rushed, or released on the fact that mental or physical strain affects the quality of your outcome. Be well, and your work will reflect it. For us (your supporters) Good things come to those who wait, I am really looking forward to your release. It's not like I don't have other things to do to take up my time (I create 3d print stuff) lol. So please, take whatever mental form of stretches you need. Being an artist myself, I know what the strive for perfection is like. So don't beat yourselves up, so many of us have your back. 💛

AmbrosiaSaladSandwich

yes, very much this; in the old days, we'd say "quoted for truth" to second and third something in solidarity.

Anthony Docimo

Take care of yourselves, your children, and your team. Don't stop taking breaks. We're here because we want to support you.

Anthony Docimo

I've said it before, but don't burn yourselves out. I'm looking forward to the release, of course, but taking time for yourselves is important <3
