Added 2025-09-25 15:00:19 +0000 UTCWe're officially kicking off our Spooky Vibes films and this one humbled me in ways I wasn't quite prepared for. I pressed play feeling so sure that I'd be safe in the hands of Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Like I could handle whatever darkness this film had to offer me alongside brilliant actors. But it wasted no time in pulling me down into its shadows and showing me just how wrong I was to trust that I was ready to witness this story.
All of it unfolded like a trap that you don't really realize you've stepped into until it's way too late. Every twist cut deeper than the last. Every murder made my stomach inside out. The way the killer twisted the Word. Something meant to guide and uplift and turned it into a weapon of judgement felt like a punch straight to the soul. It rattled me deeply in ways I never expected.
The ending I don't even have words for. I felt a tidal wave of emotions crashing down at once. Horror, sorrow, disbelief. Wrath. It left me sitting in the silence of the credits, unsure really how to feel completely.
This was more than just my first thriller of the season, it was a huge wake-up call haha. I walked in so bold and ready. But now I'm completely humbled. The true masters of this genre don't mess around, and I'm about to find out the rest of this season 😅🔥 But even though I'm completely shaken by this film, I can't deny that I'm actually excited to see what movie you all pick next! If anything, Se7en felt like a true initiation to the thriller/horror genre. And I'm just glad that you all are here to hold my hand through the rest of them! (Next time I need to bring a cozy blanket and some warm tea hahah)
For my gamers out there: This film gave me major Heavy Rain vibes! I almost felt like I completely stepped back into that same stormy, twisted police office. It actually brought me a lot of comfort to mentally draw back to that game and remember that I already survived that demented ride haha. Did you feel that too?

(📌 I don't think it's the remastered version? But it was the most accessible to me! I did some research, and the runtime should be the same no matter what version you own. Only the visuals changed, which honestly- these visuals were good enough for me LOL)

And I love that underneath all the darkness the deeper theme of hope is there. Somerset's quiet reawakening definitely hit me. Especially when you realize Mills' fire is what reignited his will to actually care again. It's pretty haunting yet poetic. Also, your Fincher list is amazing! I've read Gone Girl but I haven't seen the movie yet so I need to watch that one soon. I think I've gotten quite a few Zodiac recommendations before, so I'll go ahead and bump that one up on my list too! Fincher really does paint with shadows and silence in a way that feels hypnotic. This is David Fincher. Fincher is probably one of the three most cinematic directors out there (along with Ridley Scott and Denis Vileneuve), His scenes are like paintings. Fincher's other films are as mind bending, but not quite as grim. You'd love The Game, The Social Network, Gone Girl and Zodiac. Se7en, despite it's very grim and heavy nature is actually a film about hope. We are introduced to Somerset, a very fastidious, academic but beat down detective on his last week of service. Somerset is the very face of apathy, being on the front line facing off against the city’s constant angry brutality throughout his daily working life. The very city pulses with malevolent angst of which Somerset can only escape into sleep with the aid of the calming tick-tick-tick of a metronome each night. "Where are you headed ?" a taxi driver asks him. "Far, far away from here" is his melancholic response. The first murder scene is discovered, and thrown into the mix is the young transferred detective, the “hotshot” Mills. Mills couldn’t be more different from Somerset, with his dishevelled appearance, foul mouth, he wears his heart on his sleeve and has a cocky, devil may care attitude. Somerset immediately takes Mills to task, in what he believes is a service to try and insulate Mills from the horror that his city will undoubtedly dump on him. To whit Mills objects passionately to ; Mills - The point is that you're not quitting because you believe these things you say. You want to believe them because you're quitting. And you want me to agree with you and say "You're right, it's all f*d up. It's a mess. We should all go live in a log cabin." But I won't. I won't say that. I don't agree with you. I do not. I can't. Mills’ passion, his youthful optimistic and desperate hope tears through Somerset’s apathy like a wrecking ball. The night of this conversation with Mills, Somerset then smashes his metronome against the wall in righteous rage. He is awoken, angry, energised and engaged back fully with his world. And its not just Mills, it’s Somerset’s personal engagement through the film with Mills’ lovely wife Tracy. You can see as Somerset gets charmingly engaged into the young couple’s lives that he is slightly jealous of their youth, their promise, and he is absolutely terrified of what his city is going to do these “kids”. And it turns out that Somerset was right. The city eats them both up whole, the “every-man” killer John Doe choosing Mills and his wife as his sixth and seventh victims. But Somerset has been redeemed, re-awoken. He is asked where he’ll be... “I’ll be around.”

2025-10-08 20:41:26 +0000 UTCKevin Spacey was originally going to receive third billing behind Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, but asked to have his name removed, to maintain the secrecy of John Doe's identity. He felt that since "Backdraft" and "The Usual Suspects" (side note, for which he eventually won an Oscar) were being released around the same time, audiences would begin to recognize him, and if they saw his name in the credits but didn't see him for two-thirds of the movie, they would immediately know he was playing the killer. It was also advantageous to him because he didn't have to promote or do interviews about it. And if no one else has mentioned it, an interesting fact is that, even though he's portrayed as one of the most sadistic serial killers in film history, John Doe is never actually seen killing anyone on-screen.
