Hi all,

I've received a complete set of images from that first artist, the one drawing the picture of the mercenary.

They've made a number of improvements to the mercenary image based on your feedback and it certainly does look better than it did before. Nevertheless, I don't find it appealing enough to include in the game. They have asked if there are any changes that I'd like made, but ultimately I don't feel like tweaking those images will bring them over the line and I'm not going to ask for any changes to art that I won't be using - that'd just be wasting the artist's time.

This image was my favourite from the commission, and I'm undecided whether or not to use it in the game.

So, my questions for you:

A: Do you think this image is good enough to be included in the game, with or without minor changes? You can assume it'll be appearing alongside adventurer art like the "Ailwin/Alvie" images I posted earlier, or something similar to them.

B: If you do think it's good enough, are there any changes you think the artist should make for a final version? These will have to be small changes, as the artist has already done a lot of revisions.

C: Monster image sets will normally include a few other images that were not included in the trial commission. If you think this image should be in the game, do you think I should commission the artist to complete the image set, or would you be happy with a different artist completing it based on this image?

Monster bio below. The protrusions on its head are a result of my requesting that the monster have some sort of distinct facial feature that can be used to show its relation to another monster type.

Monster Name: Skritch

Description:

Tall, skinny and rather weak, Skritch are have just one natural advantage: an uncanny ability to bond with animals and bestial monsters.

Originally created as a Grilk slave-race to work in their farms and stables, many Skritch escaped as the great Grilk civilisation fell. They now dwell in small forest settlements, defended by their animal friends from larger, stronger foes.

Distrustful, suspicious and rude, Skritch are generally not a pleasant encounter for human adventurers. Still, a Skritch will gain respect among its peers if it can persuade a member of a stronger humanoid race to join it for a roll in the moss. Male Skritch may fantasize about seducing an Ogress, but outside the world of dreams they're more than happy for a chance to get frisky with a human.

Don't really see issues besides the lil crooked dick horns in the middle of it's forehead

BigManCheese

The minor errors have been highlighted plenty, but the style itself is great - I'd say nothing wrong with utilizing a fixed version of this and getting a full set.

DistantMoose

Yeah, there's a lot of interesting horn designs out there that won't put him in demonic territory. Especially if you go for antler-like horns rather than goat/bull horns. Another suggestion is antennae, like Andorians from Star Trek do?

Sentimental Penguin

Hi, the artist has shown me a variation with spikes, but I'm thinking of going back to the horns - I feel that the spikes make it look a bit too demonic. Anyway, I'll mull it over and make a final decision. In any case, I appreciate your thoughts and your comment about the teeth was especially useful - the new version has slightly more jagged teeth and I agree that it looks better like that.

Splendid Ostrich

Ah, well I'm looking forward to when it does.

keenam

Maybe something like what male Twi'lek have?

Sentimental Penguin

Give him spikes or tentacle hair? The horns look too short and too long at the same time to be interesting.

Sentimental Penguin

Thanks! I see what you mean about scale, and it is potentially an issue for monsters with all of them having to fit in the same piece of the UI. There are some issues around backgrounds though - it potentially limits the events that a monster can appear in (e.g. if there are trees in the background of a forest monster, can it still appear in a cabin event?) and it also has some design implications - I'm currently using a plain black bg but I'll be experimenting with overlays later on. For now I'll stick with no-bg images, but I appreciate your feedback and I'll think about how future images can show scale better. Perhaps the clothed versions could carry or wear something that helps imply it?

Splendid Ostrich

Cheers. I've passed on your comments and I'll see if the artist can update the mouth. I'm not so sure about the horns, though I'd be interested to hear your suggestions for alternatives. With 48 monsters needed, I'd rather avoid going in a traditional way of just having animal-horns becase that might be treading on the toes of other potential monster types.

Splendid Ostrich

Thanks, I'll pass it on

Splendid Ostrich

It's for game-two - still in very early development. There won't be a public version for quite some time.

Splendid Ostrich

Is this from a game I have not heard about?

keenam

I agree with Sentimental Penguin. Everything seems pretty good minus the horns and left foot (his right foot.) Kinda look like stubby thumbs without nails. The left foot is turned too far to the right and doesn't match up to its' corresponding kneecap.

RevolverJ

I like everything about this except the horns. Why do the horns look like penises? (Also the teeth might be too nice for a monster that lives a relatively feral life?)

Sentimental Penguin

It looks good. For the sake of scale it might be good to have something in the background with which to see how tall it is. In that picture it looks like it could be really tall and lanky, or really small and scrawny
