Essential Reading Order: All-New All-Different Marvel

Hey everyone, while I know some people like to read every single issue Marvel publishes (as I do), some people just want a streamlined list of the most important series and issues. I've decided to start providing what I call Essential Reading Orders exclusively on Patreon for each era once they're complete on the site. These essential lists will trim the fat and only list the issues I think are good or important enough to the overall arc of the Marvel Universe and the major characters within.

I'm starting off with the All-New All-Different Marvel era, which I think will be useful because while they tried a lot of new things during this time, frankly much of it was poorly received and didn't have a lasting impact. I've cut roughly 50% of the issues out of the complete reading order to provide you this list of essential series, events, and arcs. If you're looking to dive into the All-New All-Different era but don't want to make a full commitment, this list is for you. And of course feel free to compare it to the full list on the site and add back in any series you're interested in.

Part 1: New Foundation

Part 2: Street-Level and Beyond

Part 3: Inhumans, Mutants, and Magic

Part 4: Avengers: Standoff!

Part 5: Road to War

Part 6: Civil War II

Part 7: Civil War II Aftermath

Part 8: The Clone Conspiracy

Part 9: Inhumans vs. X-Men

Part 10: Empire Building

Part 11: Secret Empire

Part 12: Legacy

Hi Will, yes and no. Marvel has never done a complete reboot or reset of their universe, so technically each era builds on the history of previous eras, but they are also designed as good entry points for new readers, particularly starting with Marvel NOW! in 2012. Every few years since then Marvel relaunches pretty much all of their series with new number 1 issues and creative teams that while may reference past events, are designed to tell new stories that don’t require a lot of knowledge of previous events to enjoy.

Is each era considered self contained or do I have to read the previous era to get up to speed?

Hi Markus, good catch. It is actually in Part 2 on the site, so I fixed it in this list. As for Sgt. Fury that’s a special case since those are WWII stories that take place decades before the rest of the Silver Age stories continuity-wise and I didn’t want to slow down the reading order by getting people distracted by 80 war comics that have really nothing to do with the Marvel Universe. I included the first 13 to give people a brief introduction to Nick Fury. I think that is the only example of something like that.

I compared the list you posted here with the full list on the site and noticed that Uncanny Avengers #1-4 in part 3 is on the list in this post but is missing on the site. On a site note: In the Silver Age reading order we have Sgt. Fury and his howling command up until #13 but the remaining issus are missing.
