33-The Secrets of Lothal

"The situation on Lothal is delicate," Serina explained, her tone firm but understanding. "Governor Azadi is under pressure. Internal tensions, lack of military support, and growing distrust of the Republic have him on the verge of losing control. Duchess Kryze, this is not just a diplomatic trip; it is a critical mission to secure a strategic point."
Satine nodded, appearing calm despite the circumstances. "Understood. What if the situation becomes dangerous?"
Arnet, in his usual direct tone, intervened. "We have a ship ready to jump to Lothal in case of emergency. But your objective is clear: convince Azadi that the UNSC can be the ally they need. We do not want any more conflict, Duchess."
"I understand, Admiral," Satine replied with a slight nod. "Lothal deserves stability, and I will do everything in my power to achieve it."
"Good luck," was all Arnet said before the transmission cut out.

The sky over Lothal was tinted orange, a contrast to the metallic gray of the diplomatic ship descending toward a makeshift platform near Capital City. As the transport touched down, Satine Kryze watched from the window. The city showed clear signs of abandonment: partially destroyed buildings, dusty streets, and an air of desperation that was felt even from this height.
As the ship's ramp lowered, Satine, with her characteristic regal bearing, stepped forward accompanied by two aides. The UNSC security escort remained on the ship, following strict orders not to intervene unless absolutely necessary.
On the platform, Governor Ryder Azadi waited with a small group of advisors. His face showed traces of tension and exhaustion, but he maintained a firm stance. He stepped forward to greet Satine, bowing his head slightly in respect.
"Duchess Kryze," he began, his voice raspy. “I hope your journey was more pleasant than the situation we face here.”
Satine returned a slight smile, but her eyes did not hide concern. “Governor Azadi, I appreciate your reception. I know the circumstances are not ideal, but I am here to offer a solution.”
Azadi did not hide his skepticism as he observed Satine and her entourage. “With all due respect, Duchess, we have heard promises before. The Republic assured us protection, and all we got was abandonment. Why should I trust that this time will be different?”
As they spoke, Satine could not help but notice the surroundings. Beyond the platform, buildings were covered in graffiti criticizing both the Republic and any outside intervention. The streets were nearly empty, save for small groups of citizens watching from the shadows, clearly distrustful.
In the meeting room, Satine Kryze displayed a detailed holomap of Lothal’s current defenses, provided by Serina. The three-dimensional image showed non-existent orbital stations, an intermittent communications network and areas of critical infrastructure marked in red, demonstrating their vulnerability.
"Governor Azadi," Satine began in a firm but conciliatory tone, "I do not come with empty promises. The UNSC can offer state-of-the-art orbital defenses, highly trained troops, and advanced technology to revitalize your infrastructure. But for this to happen, we need more than just an alliance. It requires total commitment and a shared vision."
Azadi, visibly exhausted from years of fighting and political pressure, crossed his arms as he analyzed the holomap. "Duchess Kryze, I do not question the seriousness of your offer, but the situation here is far more complicated than it appears. Lothal is not just a planet; it is a powder keg. There are local factions that do not trust any outside force. Not the Republic, much less the UNSC. To them, any intervention is a threat to our sovereignty."
Satine raised an eyebrow in curiosity and a hint of concern. "And those advisors you mentioned? Where are they now?"
Azadi sighed deeply and rubbed his temples. "They are on the outskirts, organizing the discontented. Some even have considerable resources, weaponry, and followers. These are not simply angry citizens; they are leaders who have lost all faith in institutions. Their tactics are closer to sabotage than diplomacy. They are convinced that any alliance will only bring more destruction to Lothal."
Satine leaned forward, her hands resting on the table. Her blue eyes locked with Azadi's intently. "Governor, I understand your concern. But let me be clear: the UNSC has no interest in governing Lothal. Our only goal is to ensure that this planet becomes a strategic bastion against the Covenant. However, every day that passes without an agreement brings us closer to catastrophe. If these factions persist in their distrust, it will be up to you to mediate with them. This opportunity is unique. If we let it pass, Lothal could become the next Tatooine."
Before Azadi could formulate a response, the door to the meeting room slammed open. An aide rushed in, his face marked by tension and urgency. “Governor, unrest has been reported near the southern factories. It seems dissident factions have begun to mobilize. Some reports suggest sabotage, others armed clashes.”
Azadi cursed under his breath, bringing a hand to his forehead. “How many men are involved? Any critical damage?”
“A significant number, Governor. We have been unable to establish contact with our supervisors in the area. Communications are being blocked, possibly by themselves.”
Satine immediately stood up, her posture straight and determined. “Can we go there? I need to understand who these people are and what they are after.”
Azadi stared at her, incredulous. “Duchess, this is not a simple political disagreement. These people are not committee leaders or angry citizens. They are armed extremists, and the factories in the south are their safest stronghold. Going in there would be madness.”
Satine stared at him, unblinking. “Governor, if we want to find a real solution to this conflict, we must confront it at its root. If we stay here arguing, the situation will only get worse. Take me there. I want to talk to them.”
“Talking to them will solve nothing. It may cost you your life,” Azadi replied in frustration. “I am not willing to risk a diplomatic envoy, much less you.”
Satine took a step toward him, her voice calm but firm. "Governor, your people are on the brink of collapse, and these people are at the center of that crisis. The Republic has not been here to help them, and I understand that. But if we do not do this now, it will be too late for Lothal. Let me do what I do best: negotiate and find a solution."
Azadi watched her in silence for a few seconds, her expression a mixture of skepticism and resignation. Finally, she sighed. "Very well. But if we go, we will do so under my supervision and with an armed detachment. I will not allow this peace mission to end in tragedy."
Satine nodded gratefully, though with a slight smile of determination. "Understood. But let me make one thing clear: the sole purpose of this visit is to establish dialogue. We will not go with weapons raised or to intimidate anyone. Lothal needs hope, not more violence."

A group of armed protesters blocked the entrances to the factories. Led by a burly, stern-looking man named Doran Marr, they chanted slogans against any outside intervention, while planting improvised explosives in the surrounding areas.
When Satine's delegation arrived, Doran eyed them with disdain. "So the famous Satine Kryze is coming to save us. What will she do? Bring another army to occupy us?"
Satine stepped forward, hands at her sides. "Mr. Marr, I'm not here to occupy anything. I'm here because Lothal needs security and stability, something that you, brave as you are, cannot guarantee alone."
"And to trust an army that doesn't even belong in this galaxy? Those are empty words," Marr spat.
Satine remained calm. "Not trusting them will mean the end of Lothal. If the Covenant gets here, their makeshift weapons won't be enough. I've seen planets fall myself, and believe me, the destruction they bring leaves no room for heroes."
There was a murmur among the protesters. The determination in Satine's voice was evident, and some began to lower their weapons. Doran, however, stood firm.
A group of armed protesters blocked the entrances to the southern factories. Their faces were filled with anger and fear as they chanted slogans against any outside intervention. Led by a burly, stern-faced man, Doran Marr, they held defensive positions behind makeshift barricades made of scrap metal and broken machinery. All around, homemade explosives were strategically placed, ready to blow any advances to pieces.
When Satine's delegation arrived, consisting of Governor Ryder Azadi, some of his personal guards, and a small UNSC security detail, the atmosphere immediately grew tense. The protesters pointed their makeshift weapons as Doran raised his voice.
“Stop right there! Not one more step or we will shoot.”
The governor’s guards raised their weapons in response, but Satine raised a hand, stopping them. “We are here to talk, not fight,” she said firmly, but her voice was silenced by a warning shot into the air that echoed throughout the place.
Doran Marr stepped forward, pointing his rifle at the delegation. “So the famous Satine Kryze is coming to save us. What will she do? Bring another army to occupy us? This planet has seen enough conquerors!”
Ryder Azadi tried to mediate. “Doran, listen to me. This does not have to end in violence. We are here to find a solution that benefits everyone.”
“Benefit everyone?” Marr growled, turning to Azadi. "You think so? What do they really want? More control? More taxes? Or do they plan to hand us over to those UNSC outsiders as a commodity!"
Before Satine could speak, a gunshot erupted from the protesters' side, hitting one of the nearby machines. The governor's guards immediately responded with their own gunfire, and within seconds, the place was in chaos. Satine screamed, trying to make herself heard over the roar of gunfire.
"Stop! Stop right now!" she shouted with an authority that even surprised Azadi. Her tone cut through the air, and little by little the guns were lowered.
Doran Marr looked at his group, his eyes filled with anger but also doubt. Finally, he raised a hand, signaling his men to stop firing. "Speak quickly, Kryze. I have no time for speeches."
Satine stepped forward, ignoring the distrustful glances and the guns still raised. "Mr. Marr, I am not here to occupy anything. I am here because Lothal needs security and stability, something that you, as brave as you are, cannot guarantee alone."
“And trust an army that doesn’t even belong in this galaxy?” Marr spat. “They’re no better than the Separatists or the Republic. They just want to take over what’s left.”
Satine took a deep breath, keeping her cool. “Not trusting them will mean the end of Lothal. I’ve seen what the Covenant can do. I’ve seen planets glazed over, people reduced to ash in an instant. If they get here, their barricades and improvised explosives won’t be enough. There will be no resistance, no heroes, only death.”
A murmur ran through the protesters. Some began to lower their weapons, their faces reflecting the uncertainty that was beginning to replace their anger. Doran, however, stood firm, gritting his teeth as he scrutinized Satine with distrust.
“Why should I believe your words? Everyone who comes with promises always comes at a price. What do you gain from this?”
"What we gain," Satine said seriously, taking a step closer to him, "is a strong ally in the fight against the Covenant. Lothal has resources, it has valuable people. But they need help, and the Republic has already turned its back on them. We're not here to rule them, we're here to ensure Lothal survives."
Doran Marr sighed, running a hand over his face as he processed everything Satine was saying. Finally, he spoke. “It sounds too good to be true, Kryze. What guarantee do we have that they won’t betray us once they get what they want?”
Satine looked him straight in the eyes. “The only guarantee I can offer you is the same one I offer my own people: my word. I know that’s not worth much right now, but the UNSC isn’t here to exploit Lothal. They’re here because they know they can’t win this war alone. Every alliance, every safe planet, brings us closer to defeating the Covenant. And that includes Lothal.”
There was a long silence as Doran Marr and the protesters considered his words. Finally, Doran spoke, his tone less aggressive. “Duchess, I don’t trust the UNSC, but… I trust you. If you make this promise, you better keep it. Because if you don’t, Lothal won’t be the only place you lose.”
Satine nodded solemnly. “I will comply, Mr. Marr. Because I know what is at stake, and I know what it means to lose everything you love. I will not let that happen here.”
The group of protesters began to disperse, leaving Doran and his closest men standing next to Satine’s delegation. Ryder Azadi, who had remained silent for much of the negotiation, approached Satine and whispered, “Impressive, but this is only the beginning. Convincing these men was a challenge. Convincing the rest of the planet will be a war in itself.”
Satine looked at Azadi with a slight smile. “Then let us get to work. Because, Governor, the war is already here.”
