Story

Everyday Serena would watch Ash battle, and every time she was amazed. The way he and his Pokémon moved in sync, always moving towards their goal. Serena wanted to understand how that felt.

One day Serena got a call from Professor Sycamore. He had given her, her first Pokémon; Fennekin and since then the two had kept occasional contact.

While catching up he started telling her about a new invention he was working on by himself. He had been researching the bond needed between a trainer and their Pokémon to mega evolve. While doing so, he came up with an idea for a machine that may be able to increase that bond and bring trainers even closer to their Pokémon.

He had heard that Ash's bond to his Greninja was so great that it had unlocked a form similar to mega evolution that didn't even require a mega stone. While in this form they seemed totally in sync!

Sycamore wanted Ash's help testing the machine. However Serena unexpectedly boldly made a counter offer. She wanted to be like Ash, she respected the bond he had with his Pokémon, she offered to help test the machine in hopes that she and her partner Pokémon would be able to achieve the battle bond form too.

Sycamore was surprised and a little disappointed but respected Serena's ambition so accepted her help.

The next day Serena and friends arrived at Sycamores personal outdoors lab. Apparently he couldn't get official funding for this project so he was paying for it out of pocket. He enjoyed to be outside with nature during his experiments... plus it was easier to clean up any mess out here.

Professor Sycamore made sure everyone felt welcome and comfortable. Then when she was ready, Serena and her Braixen were asked to step into the matter transferal machine. Sycamore told them that his research was still experimental, but they were going to start with the weakest settings, so if anything went wrong, the result would probably just be that nothing happened.

Serena and Braixen both got inside the machine. They turned to each other and both gave a look of reassuring excitement. Meanwhile, Ash and his Pokémon watched from nearby, he wanted to be as supportive as possible for Serena, but Ash hadn't battled or trained in 10 whole hours! (wow!) So his attention span was plummeting and it seems like his partner Pokémon was following in Ash's footsteps...

Sycamore started the experiment. A purple light enveloped Serena and Braixen. Everything was running smoothly. Well, until Pikachu got close to the electronics. You see, there's a reason labs aren't usually built outside, overtime the equipment gets worn down to the point where a small electric shock from an electric type Pokémon can totally wreck everything.

Suddenly Sycamore's monitor screen fizzled out, then started smoking. He had totally lost control of the program! Greninja reached out to catch Pikachu after it was sent flying, but the damage was already done. The lights around Serena and Braixen changed. Serena's turned blue and Braixen's turned red. This is when Sycamore started to panic, those colours meant that the machine had switched modes. Normally it'd find emotional connections shared between both subjects and enhance them. But these colours meant the transfer would be one way... if that setting had been changed then who knows what other settings could've been changed by the overload?

The red light around Braixen intensified and after a short moment it became clear what was happening, she was growing. Which could only mean, mass transferal. He had never finished that setting, it was unstable, untested. But what he did know is that this was still a transferal machine, the mass Braixen was receiving had to come from somewhere.

Braixen stopped growing at about Serena's height. Sycamore's stomach sank as he realized he was right. If Braixen reached Serena's height then, that meant Serena...

Suddenly Serena started to change too, but she didn't grow instead she sank down to Braixen's old height.

Serena and Braixen looked at each other in shock. Braixen couldn't believe she was looking down at her trainer. But all Serena could think about was how in sync they were already, she wanted to take a shortcut, but now she'd been cut short.

Side Story (To accompany the bonus images of Braixen (spoilers) evolving) (non-canon)

It hadn't been a few days since the experiment went totally wrong. Everyone had wrapped their head around what had happened, but getting used to it was a different story entirely.

Braixen and Serena had always been close but since Serena shrunk and Braixen grew, Braixen was acting increasingly flippant disrespectful towards Serena and this behaviour was getting worse each day. Braixen started to break things and bully the smaller Pokémon it was as if her new size had gone completely to her head. It got bad enough that Ash, Clemont or anyone available would have to step in to get Braixen to listen to anything Serena said.

Serena had enough, she was Braixen's Pokémon trainer. She really cared about her Pokémon and didn't like scolding them, but Serena had to take responsibility and put her foot down.

The two went set out on a walk, despite everyone's protests, Serena insisted she go alone with Braixen. Not more than two minutes later Braixen stopped and turned away.

'What's wrong Braixen?' Serena asked, to no reaction.

'Braixen?' No response again.

'Are you ignoring me?' Serena tried to walk in front of Braixen to get her attention, but Braixen simply turned away.

'Braixen let's go, I wanted us to go the lake, I miss spending time with you!' Serena said, trying to convince her fox-like friend. Braixen crossed her arms and scoffed, it was hard to tell from this height, but it even looked like Braixen had rolled her eyes. This was the moment Serena was expecting, but she had never expected Braixen to be so rude, and this early.

'That's it! Braixen! Follow let's go now or you'll get no playtime today!' Serena raised her voice to be as assertive as she could, yet Braixen turned her snout up and continued to look away.

'I'm serious Braixen! If you don't start walking by the time I get to 3, you'll be sorry!' Braixen only clenched her teeth.

'One!' Serena shouted. Braixen started growling.

'Two!' Serena felt a little hopeful as Braixen's eyes shifted towards her. She felt like her own mother, but the counting trick always worked. Even if Braixen couldn't speak like a human, she understood enough.

'I'm almost at thr- huh?' Suddenly Serena stopped, something was happening. Braixen suddenly started glowing blue! It wasn't like the machine from earlier, this was more familiar. But how could that be happening now, why?

Braixen stared at herself in surprise before her shape started to change. Seconds later the light dissipated and Braixen was gone, in her place, standing tall was her fully evolved

form, Delphox!

'Uh, three?' Serena had no clue how to react. Her partner Pokémon had just evolved right in front of her, just as she was trying to take charge. She knew how much trouble evolution could be for a trainer. Serena couldn't help think about Ash's tales about his Charizard.

Delphox looked down at her now comparatively even smaller 'trainer' and couldn't help but let out a wide grin.

'Um, that's, great Braixen! I mean Delphox sorry. Maybe we should head back, Ash will be able to help you get used to your evolution... N-now!' Delphox starred for a moment then let out a small laugh. She bent over a little, totally covering Serena in her looming shadow. Then Delphox reached out her hand and pet Serena on the head.

Serena blushed in shocked confusion. 'Wha?! D-delphox, stop that, just listen to me!' Delphox started laughing even more and swiftly swooped up Serena. The fox-mage Pokémon picked up Serena and place her under one arm like you would a disobedient child. With her trainer under control, Delphox started walking, she didn't know where, but she was in charge now.

Delphox's trainer in training turned so red you'd think she was transforming too. 'DELPHOX WH-WHAT ARE YOU DOING, PUT ME D-DOWN!!….Urgh, why do I bother?'
