Can Anyone Beat Tina Turner?

Or: I watched a Bond movie and down a theme song related rabbit hole I went, please come and join me as I give you the results of my entirely useless side quest :D

Unrelated (but good for your ego I expect). I was looking thru my local library’s ebook catalog. On a whim, I looked for your book. Not only did they have two copies, but there were 5 people waiting for their chance to borrow one. The library was the Minuteman consortium, basically the Middlesex county suburbs west of Boston, Massachusetts. (A bunch of place names you would recognize, like Cambridge, Waltham, Reading, Bedford (which are adjacent), Woburn, and Winchester)

Wasn't it k.d. lang with David Arnold (then the composer for the films)?

Simon

okay so which theme song had the middlest note

Did you check out any of the theme adjacent material and "lost" songs? Kirstie McColl recorded "Surrender" for Tomorrow Never Dies (not to knock Ms Crow, her song is awesome, but IMHO, Surrender is just a better song).

There was once a thing on "the highest note in Eurovision". I was sure they got it wrong as I couldn't imagine anyone getting higher than the lady whose piano was on fire. Could I get a second opinion?

I did not know that Tina Turner did the Goldeneye theme (criminal, I know), but I did know that A-ha (as in the Take On Me guys) did the Living Daylights theme. Thanks, Todd in the Shadows! ^_^

Personally, I'd rate the old songs higher than the modern songs because they are from the pre-autotune era when singers had to know how to sing. As much as I love Adele and the Billie Eilish song sounds good, I am under no illusion that they aren't autotuned to perfection. There is a Y T video comparing Judy Garland's rendition of "Over The Rainbow" and Kelly Clarkson's "Live" performance. Using a spectrograph app, Judy Garland's voice had imperfections that did not affect the quality but gave her voice character. OTOH, Kelly Clarkson's version was autotuned to perfection. No wavering. Straight to the exact frequency of the note desired. No character.

As an 80s kid, Tina Turner is one of my faves. Whether it's Motown or Pop, she's great. Powerful voice. Even went to her concert back in the day.

this was absolutely vital information and my life is more complete now :)
