I Don't Have a 📚TBR Pile📚

I can't be alone in this...right?

I was going to catch up on my reading but then I saw that Jill had two Patreon videos and I had to read the comments too an....

The real problem is having a Kindle list and a library list and a life list full of tasks and adventures getting in the way of your reading time.

My library has a huge used book sale, like blimp hangar-sized, every year. My personal rules are to only buy what I can carry/fit in a backpack. I used to be a backcountry ranger, so that's about 50-70 lbs. Children's books take up the most space, but they get a lot of use, so they're worth it. Also, I have to purge as many books as I bring in to the house. So what I'm saying is: books sometimes come in waves, and unfortunately you can't read them all at once. Every room in my house has a book shelf/wall. I also love to seed the many little free libraries in my neighborhood with the books I haven't touched in a year.

Actually, most of my unread books are from those book recommendations!

My "get to eventually" list got so large that I had to buy another book shelf for it. I need to look at it more like you or just know that I'll never get to them. Ever. 😔 😢 😭

(And all that said, I don’t think anybody is obligated to have the same relationship with their reading that I do. For most of us it’s a hobby so as long as what you’re doing makes you happy, you’re not doing it wrong, obviously.)

I have a “I’ll get to it eventually” list but I don’t actually care if I never get to some of it. This is hobby reading, not part of my job, so I feel like I’m allowed to choose to support authors by buying their work even if I don’t end up feeling like reading it. It’s much like how I enjoy seeing Patreon content but don’t actually care if someone I support makes any.

I'm not good at reading multiple books at a time, so tbr pile it is. I have every intention and desire to read them, I just have a tendency to acquire books faster than I can read them, and that's without counting Ao3, or rereads (or rererererereads in the cases of WoT, Discworld and Pern), or the fact my current read has turned into a slog (queen of angels, it's weird, the subjects it tackles are weird, the language is weird, the grammar and punctuation are weird. I mean, I don't have *a* TBR pile. More like three or four.

I didn't used to have one then I started watching C.M. Alongi (tiktok and YouTube and Patreon) and she usually throws out the names of authors and books that sound so interesting that well.... anyway always accepting book recs now.

I don't have a TBR pile either, it's a TBR bookcase, in case I find myself with nothing to do for 4 or 5 years.
