It's Not 🔥Ragebait🔥 It's Just Algebra

Maths Tutor Jill rears her head again :D I'm currently working on a Daredevil video, and some other stuff, but in the meantime, please celebrate that I can speak in a normal fashion again, after several days of spending my evenings in silence :D

But what if, maybe, it wasn't a bat and a ball, and was instead, an antique bayonet and a board of cheeses?

Berthulf

The ball was free The bat was 1£ Tax was 0.10£

Alex Taylor

The dreaded Algebra rears its head once again. Also yes, people are waaaay to quick to accuse people of rage baiting for posing relatively simple problems these days.

Owen Wells

The bat and the ball cost £110, the bat is £100 more than the ball, how much is the ball? .... Does this help?

ConvincingIllusion

The important thing is to not hear an imaginary comma between '£1' and 'more than the ball'.

Sagitta

I loved this video despite the lack of fighting and cheese.

Dan B

The math tutor in me thanks you for calmly explaining this.

Nil'Kemorya

Perhaps it also doesn't help that algrebra is an anagram for rage bal

Jesse Thompson

My brain was struggling with how we appear to be working in 1970s era pricing, so the actual description of the problem bounced right off of me the first time around.

Eva Schiffer

I first encountered this question in "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman. He goes on to explain the problems with the way evolution has taught us to go with our first thought, and how this can lead us to the wrong conclusion. If you like a bit of easily accessible sociology and neuroscience it's a great read

Alexander

My dad teaches high school math, so this is right in his lane. And I agree with others here that people hear the £0.10 and fail to hear "The bat costs £1 *more* than the ball"

Alex W.

My son's math teacher was terrible and the nail in the coffin before moving him was algebra. So as he's still in school for me algebra = rage bait despite enjoying it in school. Ps. Finding out you used to be a teacher makes sense.
