But it turns out neither my phone nor iPad will do that, and I am currently in an AirBnB with a Mystery Lamp. How does it switch on? Is the bulb just dead? I have tried many things and none of them work, so I may just have to ask tomorrow.

Missing remote control or broken bulb are my guesses, I asked AirBnb Man and he came and took the lamp away to fix…and then brought me a replacement half an hour later, so clearly he is also…in the dark
