Why All the Wincest?
Added 2025-07-11 10:20:56 +0000 UTCAO3 is disproportionately full of stories about two fictional brothers from the TV show Supernatural getting it on. I will now attempt to (partially) explain why, because...well, some people wanted to know why.
Which honestly: fair question.

After watching this when it came out and remembering that I had read a Naomi Novik book, I've just discovered weeks later that I've loved her Drarry fanfics for many, many years, and I've recently been trying not to let her Game of Thrones fics pull me into yet another fandom. Which is especially weird because I got the, this feels like fanfic vibe, from the YA book of hers I'd read, but not in a good way. Also I guess I didn't look closely the one time I read her bio and connect what "I built this city," a join date in 2008, and a user number of 8 meant. Just randomly wondered what the author name is that she alluded to in said bio, and if I'd read it 🤣

2025-07-12 16:31:55 +0000 UTCAs pointed out above by Harold Lindstrom so long as you mind the tags you should be fine which sums up most of reality. As I'm currently reading a series I failed to finish in the 80's my reason for staying off AO3 is simply time.

2025-07-11 21:11:46 +0000 UTCThe general answer is that the internet is weird, and has been for a very long time. But TBH, if you get any two attractive men with even a hint of connection, then there's going to be smut about them even when it makes no sense. Also, I recently found my new favourite AO3 tag 'WOE: Unrestrained shippy nonsense be upon ye'.

2025-07-11 19:00:19 +0000 UTCBack in the day... there was *slash*. And one of the more popular slash pairings was Kirk/Spock. And most of it was written by women.

2025-07-11 12:32:41 +0000 UTCYou and ColeyDoesThings are doing some fine work on the history and culture of fanfiction 🫡

2025-07-11 12:05:02 +0000 UTCJust respect the tags, and you're pretty safe. The majority is sfw and noncontroversial, but there are some real weird rabbit holes you can find without much effort
