I have to ask do you do the Fandango?

Bart de Boisblanc

darn, that sucks. Your vide inspired me to order the film. I also ordered Saraband for a lost Princess as well' I'm recovering my admiration for Stewart Granger in my old age.

Hey, I listen to all suggestions, I love suggestions! I only do about 1% of them, but you should always send them anyway :)

Jill Bearup

This feels incredibly impertinent, so I apologize in advance! I adore your reviews of movie/tv fight scenes, and when I came across Sellsword Arts' video about "what fight scenes could look like if not for Hollywood BS", I immediately wondered what your take would be. I don't know if it would be good content, or if it's something you would even be interested in, but I do hope you at least enjoy some other stage combat practitioners - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PAL4UE5Vgeg Again, apologies for sending a suggestion - you have always made brilliant videos, and it feels so arrogant to think that one of your fans would know what you should look at.

Thank you for this!!

Sadly that is not a dodge, it is an upscale, because they do not sell a Scaramouche Blu-Ray, and the DVD quality is so bad that I spent a large portion of the movie wondering if the Marquis du Maynes was moonlighting as Andre Moreau, just in a different wig.

Visible now on YT. I wondered why the film was so smeared and over-processed … if that was your copyright claim dodge. Sad that you have to go to such great lengths to effectively claim fair use doctrine when it is so obvious. Loved the overlaid target numbers on the fight footage. … For the theater duel, I suspect they had risers or something just out of camera view when they were fighting on the (clearly flat) box rails. Have to see the film. Imagine, an protagonist who is NOT immediately and inexplicably a boss who can do no wrong, cannot overcome every challenge, is not an ideal and admirable person. "Bros before garden implements" took me a moment … and then i wondered if there would be a duel with rakes. THAT would be something to see.

I'd never seen the movie, but I did read the book, and really enjoyed it.

I have Patreon! It hosts ad-free on its own player and I can make the videos public so anyone can watch, which is very useful. (The Patreon player is relatively new, but I'm very glad of it)

Jill Bearup

youtube just recommended me the video and it is excellent

You have no idea how happy I am that Just Stab Me Now is coming out BEFORE my birthday!!!

CupcakeCrusader

I do love Scaramouche, thanks for this!

"Bros before gardening implements" You're clearly not talking billhooks.

Paul Compton

Seems to be live on yt now

I think the ending for demaine is perfect actually. He's so thoroughly broken down, his mystique so effectively shattered that he simply no longer matters. He ceases to be an entity in the film. Without his easy ability to kill who he wants when he wants, he's nobody.

Sookie Stackhouse-Lenin

Well, modern Hollywood seems to forget the antagonist can be something else than pure evil

Franck

Wow, this was amazing

Thank you for finally covering this one; my favorite of the classic swordfighting movies.

I had never heard of this movie and I'm thrilled to know about it now. Great video! Sorry about YouTube being well YouTube

Lindsay Lloyd

I read the book, eons ago, but I've never seen the movie. Excellent, excellent review, Jill!

Ann Brookens

I'm probably a bit to jung to know this movie but I still enjoy these videos even if I don't know the films.

Christoph

Great video but I could have done with a mention of the novel Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini, on which the film is based. Also a few mentions of the actors Mel Ferrer (one-time husband of Audrey Hepburn), Janet Leigh (mother of Jamie Lee Cutis, victim of Psycho and possibly the first person to flush a toilet on film) and Stewart Granger would have been good. Stewart Granger (real name James Stewart) played the title role in the film Swordsman of Siena which I might have mentioned in a recent comment on another video.

You should look into getting a new video host. Vimeo in particular. Let's start breaking the YT dependency.

A shame, your review made me want to watch the movie and I'm sure others would to but there's no arguing with lawyers. More seriously sorry it means you're not getting advertisement revenue for all that work, FWIW I enjoyed this.
