How Harry Potter Killed Romance Con

Welcome to twenty-seven and a half minutes of Absolute Cancel Carnage, and the story that I was glued to over the summer. What happened to Romance Con? What about EnchantiCon? Who was going to be the next subject of a Two Minute Hate on Threads? What even IS Threads?

I hope you enjoy the video!

Mine Q

Oh I got that, about 25 years ago when I got my first computer. But there are always consequences...always.

tbf, "strangers on the internet" are ALWAYS mad about something. a whole lot of people, a whole lot of free time and what people used to do for entertainment just costs a more and more ridiculous amount of money every year... and the anonymity of the internet itself. so people feel like they can say whatever they want with no real consequnces.

tzxazrael

So, your first day on the internet then? lol, but seriously, that's about all that people make a big fuss about on the internet at large. "somebody else's opinion doesn't match mine, and how very dare they!" repeat back and forth ad nauseum.

tzxazrael

Love the X to doubt.

Jill I may be missing a point here, but I think that some people are getting their knickers in a twist over someone's opinion and that's a stupid thing to do...IMO. At the end of the day...it's a book, a derivative book at that. Don't people have better things to do than get upset over whatever it is they are getting upset over.

and that the organisers of these events haven't noticed that capitulating to their demands doesn't even placate the vocal minority while it does drive off the quiet majority of their paying customers who didn't mind or didn't mind enough to stop coming.

There’s a conversation to be had about social cache, but that ship has sailed away a while ago in terms of JKR. Keeping your money out of the hands of those you don’t agree with/find reprehensible is the best you can do. The better conversation to be had is the one where bullying tactics are used and never stop because no one sees when something is posted or checks if there more recent developments because people just want to be bullies. Or people who just want to bully others are also lazy.

Telling someone to 'go touch snow' just sounds a lot more threatening than 'go touch grass' XD

We don’t ban people for politely expressed opinions here, this isn’t Threads 😁 Though as a general note to everyone, I will glare at you all disapprovingly if this comments section turns into β€œDebating Statements Made By JK Rowling-Fest 2025”. Don’t make me break out my Disappointed Teacher Face, people πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ«

I should have noted the message about grass requirements prior to watching in full, the (only) 6 inches of snow that abounds is confounding my attempts. Excellent rabbit hole.

Charles Coleman

I get the very distinct impression that for all parties involved, their mischief has, in fact, NOT been managed... ;)

Shaun Abdelkerim

It actually enrages me that a small number of loud-mouthed trouble makers use their time and energy to ruin innocuous things that a larger number of quietly mannered folks innocently enjoy!

Ann Brookens

I feel like the line goes where JKR gets money from it. She is using her money for her bigoted crusade, and that's wrong. But if she doesn't get money from it... eh

I wish you would refer to JK Rowling's words as, if not hate speech and discrimination, at least uninformed, hurtful and mocking comments with a serious impact on all LGBT+ persons, including her very distasteful comments expressing she thinks asexuality is fake and stupid. Even people who think agree with some anti-trans rhetoric should be able to admit that Joanne is making a spectacle of herself in a tasteless and untactful way when she said 'Why do I need to know you don't fancy a shag?' about asexual people. Nobody should feel pressured to try to pretend to want to have sex, if they never have - and it's a marginalizing enough experience that they deserve a space and identity to talk about it. Ps. I think people should get to choose their own pronouns and to transition if they want to, and I think that should be more accessible and affordable. Especially for those who have already had operations halting their own sexual hormone production and are now physically dependant on taking hormones . I really hope this doesn't start a fight or that I get kicked from the patreon, because I'm looking forward to the next Space Me Now episodes very much Thank you

I kinda feel enjoying tangential media (especially stuff that explicitly sampled HP DNA) is the best way to screw JK. You get your content and she doesn't see a dime of its success. Full scorched earth (assuming no one was being performative for the vibes), is wildly impractical and more likely to hurt people even less related than "valid" targets.

shadowscribble

... yeah that sounds like a internet con fire. I've seen a few over the Years and will give credit where it's due when they can somehow save the con. I live the what I am repeatedly told is the most isolated capital city in the world. Even we have had issues in the past. We used to get 4 cons (of decent size) to my knowledge but the last I looked the nerdom was down to 3 from mismanagement of a scandal. As far as JK goes my personal policy is screw her and whatever makes her money, beyond that live your life and if you can make bank while screwing her, Gods speed.

Julia Schurmann

The first time I can remember in my life where I realised people's opinions of the American Education System. The depressing part is... they weren't entirely wrong. (I'm Australian and commenting from the outside looking in)

Julia Schurmann

3:35 You mention the release of "The Philosophers stone". Given that you have a quite large American audience you might need a subtitle flash up to explain that it was released in America under the title "The Sorcerers stone" because ... it was decided that the American audience was too stupid to know what a philosopher was. I kid you not!
